Question about Ford Escort

1991 Ford Escort failed smog test...CO (%) MAX 1.0, measured at 1.17. How to resolve problem so it will pass smog retest?

    It is a smog test done in California. The engine doesn't have a carb as it's fuel injection (1.9 L SEFI or LOHM engine). Any more thoughts?

Apart from the obvious ,,air filter is blocked ,now if its a 1991 then it could have a carb ,around the base of the carb is an airscrew ,find it and screw it in to reduce the petrol flow ,engine will go lumpy so increase idle to compensate.Now this setting for a carb model here in spain is 2.0 so i have a funny feeling that the inspector is being over zealous ,but if you are in california??? they are a bit paranoid their ,just spoke to another mechanic in the UK on messenger and he confirms thats its 2.0 their as well and hes of the same opinion as me and thats to find a local garage close to the inspection depot then put car into that garage and hope the mechanic is friends with the tester and he talks it through like i do when i take vehicles for a mechanical inspection here in spain.If i had a better idea of what engine you had in this escort i could ask around and come to some sort of reply ,but iam assuming its a LHD version of the british built escort in liverpool the other thing is that when i worked in fords in the early 70s on the assembly line in the engine plant we built a special version of the then Mk1 escort /ford cortina engine and it was fitted with all special valves on the inlet manifold and distributor ,beleave it was for a car called the pinto ??Anyway if has all these antipoloution controls try pulling off one of the small vacumn pipes as this will allow more air into the engine on idle reducing the CO2 .Or take it to dealer and ask them to have a look who will no doubt have an old dinasaur like me who will know what to do ??or trade it in on scrappage plan and get a good deal against a new vehicle.Best of british with your problem ----from spain

    Sorry cant help much here because i have never seen one of these engines ,let alone worked on one .But if i had it in front of me then i could no doubt work out whats causing the problem.Now i should imagine that something is causing it to run rich on idle ,if the CO2 levels are ok when engine is reving up then their must be a valve that opens on idle to allow more air into intake i should imagine that this valve will have two vacumn pipes running to it that balance the valve so to speak and when engine is above idle speed the vacumn drops allowing the valve to close and when it idles the increase in manifold vacumn opens the valve allowing more air into manifold reducing the CO2 .But to be totally honest without seeing it in front of me ??? This is of course assuming that the engine isnt worn ,ie-- valve seats ,piston ring wear ,bore wear ect .When emmisions are tested here a sensor is put in tailpipe and a small vac pump sucks the exhaust into a machine that measures the gas .... Honest the thing thats checked here first is the paperwork and the chassis number thats stamped on the body ,then the horn -- well this is spain and they all drive with hand on horn,,, Well its 22 15 here in spain and i have to go and pick er indoors up from work then iam banned from being on here till the morning when i can get on while shes still asleep.As stated i do apologise but i have no experiance with an old vehicle under your state emmisions laws ,Although the new cars here have the specs that you use in california as you will appreciate the cars are the same as yours ,identical ,but older cars ?? are a different kettle of fish .must dash now because if i keep her waiting iam in the doghouse

What where the Emission Gas readings?
What is the standard to pass at your location?

You can Google exhaust gases & study what causes
the gases that were to HI & cause the vehicle to fail

Could be any number of things from a dirty air filter,dirty oil,
neglected ignition system,old failed exhaust converter,etc

You ALWAYS work on ALL Vehicles for a few days BEFORE
you go to inspection,then again, if they fail, using the exhaust
gases as your guide to resolving the area or system with the problem

I rebuilt the TBI, Changed every sensor in the truck and replaced the heads. I still cannot pass the CA smog test


Check everything that is connected to a vacuum line, check the CAT and the injectors and last run a compression test.

Jose, I don't know if this will give you the answer you are looking for because there are many things to consider here. The exhaust gas recirculation valve (EGR) is one of the main things involved in reducing NO emissions. This valve is controled by the power control module. (PCM) This is your vehicles computer. The PCM monitors the vehicles speed and will command the EGR to open when the vehicle attains a certain speed, which is why the ASM test being done is recorded at two different speeds. At 25 MPH your vehicle failed the hydrocarbon (HC) emissions limit and this could be for a number of reasons. When is the last time you car was tuned up? Old spark plugs, wires, clogged air filters, oxygen sensors, leaking injectors (personal experience) or the PCV valve could be contributing to the results of the test. I guess that the easiest way to go is to tune up the engine replacing the spark plugs, wires, air filter and the PCV valve and don't forget to have the oil changed at the same time. Only then should have the vehicle retested and see what the results are. Should it fail again you may have to consider having the EGR or the catalytic converter replaced depending on what portion of the test fails. If the NO fails I would consider the EGR. If the HC fails then I would consider the catalytic converter. Good luck with this.

My 1990 chevy astro van didn't pass smog. Paperwork says it failed the following; Ignition timing: 99 ATDC. Also, ASM Emission Test Results; 15mph HC (PPM) max is 122 measured 127, 25mph max is 102...


the smog test looks like the engine is miss firing, that could cause the timing to be out of whack also, try a old fashioned tune up, new spark plugs, wires, and filters also replace the PCV valve. any time you see the NO that high suspect a miss fire.

My car just failed smog emissions test, had high nox count, at 15 miles about double max allowed, at 25 mit iles per hour, triple max allowed. The car is a 91 plymouth voyager.During the test it smoked...


i would put a good tank of gas in the system. like 93 super.drive the car for about 1 week or at least 100 miles. i would also go to a good auto parts store.u should be able to buy a bottle of engine cleaner to pass the smog test.also when u bring the car in for the inspection.take it for a rideand get it nice and warmed up.

Failed Smog Test Close to CA-HC Limits


You can try some over the counter solutions per say. Some of the mechanics in a bottle. They sell some products This will probably be the cheapest router. If this doesn't work then you need repairs.

Pass your emissions test.
