Go and have the battery tested. The first post is correct but a low battery voltage (caused when cold) will definately contribute to problems with the transmission and if you miss even a few shifts with the F4A51 transmission, you will break the wave spring.
It only happens when the temperature outside is under 75 degrees..when the weather is hot it never happens
You have a transmission control malfunction of some sort. From the passenger floorboard, look under the center of the dash above where the carpet stops. On the bottom of the yellow air conditioning boxes do you see moisture, particularly green coolant? Most times I have run into this the O-rings for the heater core have started leaking, and the fluid drips down onto the power switching relay for the transmission computer. Failing that you would need to connect a scantool to the vehicle to see what codes are present, causing the N/D lights to come on.
