Usually after dropping the pan and changing the filter, four quarts is safe to start. After a long warm up, the level will have to be checked. May take from 1/2 to 2 more quarts.
You have two choices, you can either take it to a shop and have it power flushed, recommended because this gets rid of all the fluid and replaces it with new fluid. The second is to drop the transmission pan, most cars don't have a drain plug for transmission fluid, so you would need to take out all the bolts holding the transmission pan out slowly letting the fluid drain as you bring the pan down. After you have the pan off I would go ahead and change the transmission filter, it is just above the pan inside the transmission. Place the pan back onto the transmission and fill with fluid, about 6-8 quarts.
When the pan is dropped and fluid is drained, to refill, it usually needs 5 - 6 quarts. When refilling, check the transmission fluid dipstick as you are adding the last two quarts. And also run the transmission thru the gears.
to change the transmission fluid and filter. jackup front of car, loosen all pan bolts. then loosen back bolts and take out the bolts, just to lower the pan to drain the fluid. when mostly all fluid has drained out. remove the other bolts and drop pan. to remove filter there are 2 screws. be careful not to lose the magnet in pan. remove filter and pry out the seal, push a new filter seal fully into its bore, then install new filter.working around pan, tighten the bolts a little at a time untill final torque is reached. fluid and filter change about 7 quarts. the pan bolts are 108 in-lbs. good-day !
which fluid? the transmission holds just over 13 quarts, you need 7.4 quarts if you drop pan and change filter oil change with filter is 4.5 quarts 10W 30.
A full transmission fluid change, like as in a flush, requires 9.5 quarts of DEXIII/M transmission fluid.
If you are going to be dropping the pan at home to swap the filter and gasket you will not loos near full capacity of transmission fluid. For this you may loose 3 quarts (give or take a bit). 4 Quarts on hand would be plenty for this case.
Don't forget to (with you foot on the brake) run the transmission through the every gear for a few seconds to fill the pockets before you check the level. if you do drop the pan.
Raise the car with a jack and support the vehicle with jack stands sufficiently rated to safely support the weight of the vehicle.
Place a large drip pan under the transmission.
Remove the transmission fluid drain bolt with a wrench. The drain bolt is located at the bottom of the transmission facing the pan. The pan is the large flat plate that covers the very bottom of the transmission.
Drain the transmission fluid into the drip pan.
Reinstall the transmission fluid drain bolt with the same wrench used to remove the bolt.
Lower the vehicle to the ground after removing the jack stands.
Open the hood and remove the transmission dipstick from the filler tube by pulling the dipstick. The end of the dipstick will be curved into a circle to allow a finger to slide into the circle to withdraw the dipstick.
Place a funnel into the dipstick tube and fill the transmission with new fluid by pouring the fluid into the dipstick tube.
Remove the funnel and check the fluid level with the dipstick until the fluid reaches the "Full" mark on the tip of the dipstick.
Start and allow the engine to run for a few minutes.
Move the transmission gear selector through all of the gears while depressing the brake pedal.
Turn the engine off and check the fluid level on the dipstick. Add transmission fluid if necessary.
TO DO A TRANSMISSION FLUID CHANGE YOU NEED HAVE TRANSMISSION FLUID ON HAND YOU NEED TRANSMISSION FILTER AND GASKET.YOU NEED 3/8 WRENCH THE RATCHET TYPE WITH METRIC SOCKETS. YOU NEED JACK TO RAISE VECHICLE SUPPORT VECHICLE ON JACK STANDS.YOU NEED A DRAIN PAN. ONCE YOU GET VECHICLE OFF GROUND.PLACE DRAIN PAN UNDER TRANSMISSION OIL PAN REMOVE OIL PAN DRAIN BOLT.LET FLUID DRAIN OUT IN DRAIN PAN THEN SCREW DRAIN PLUG BACK IN PLACE DONT OVER TIGHTEN.REMOVE OIL PAN AND GASKET. BESURE TO HAVE PAPER TOWEL ON HAND.MAKE SURE TRANSMISSION OIL PAN GASKET SURFACE CLEAN BEFORE INSTALLING NEW PAN GASKET. ONCE TRANSMISSION OIL PAN REMOVED. REMOVE THE OLD TRANSMISSION FILTER INSTALL THE NEW FILTER.THEN WITH NEW GASKET ON OIL PAN IN PLACE.OIL PAN NEED TO BE CLEAN SO THE GASKET ADHESIVE WILL HOLD PAN GASKET IN PLACE WHILE INSTALLING PAN AND GASKET TO TRANSMISSION.INSTALL OIL PAN BOLTS INSTALL THEM CRISS CROSS TORQUE PAN BOLTS TO 7 TO 10 FT LBS. LOOK IN OWNERS MANUAL FOR TRANSMISSION FLUID CAPACITY.BUY 10 QUARTS .TO BE ON SAFE SIDE SO YOU WILL HAVE ENOUGH FLUID ON HAND. IF YOU DONT HAVE NO TRANSMISSION FLUID CAPACITY. ADD 7.5 QUARTS FLUID.WAIT FOR 2 MINUTES.CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL ON DIP STICK. SHOULD BE ON THE FULL MARK.CRANK VECHICLE UP.LET IDLE FEW MINUTES CHECK TRANSMISSION DIP FLUID LEVEL IF DROPPED ADD LITTLE MORE.WHILE ENGINE IDLING GETTING WARM UP. KEEP EYE ON FLUID LEVEL.WHEN FLUID LEVEL STOP DROPPING. APPLY BRAKES HOLD FOOT ON BRAKES SHIFT THROUGH ALL GEARS TWO TIMES. THEN CHECK FLUID LEVEL SHOULD BE ON FULL MARK.CHECK FOR LEAKS WHILE ENGINE RUNNING.
My 1997 Caravan manual states that the trans fluid capacity is 8.5 quarts. However, in the transmission oil change section, it says to drop the pan, drain the oil, replace the filter and add 4 quarts of new fluid. This tells me that the torque converter is not draining so you are in fact, only changing "half" of the transmission fluid.
remove the transmission oil pan bolts, leave one corner tight untill your ready to lower pan and drain fluid into oil catcher pan, then remove remaining bolts and drop pan, remove the transmission filter, install new filter, clean inside pan and dry, install new gasket on pan, reinstall pan,put at least 5 quarts in before you start car and shift through gears, return to park, and bring oil to full mark.
