Question about 2004 Dodge Durango

Durango 4.7 Overheats

Truck will run hot with A/C on or a very hot day. Turn on heat brings temp back down. Have replaced thermo and flushed rad but still no change. I've read this is common and there is a manufacture issue?

Check and clean evap and radiator, check level and ratio of fluid

Dodge durango 2004 hemi running hot


You need a radiator. The cores are plugged. Flushing will not help and if you flushed the cooling system when coolant was filthy and rusty everything is now in radiator cores.

1 check,Feel the heater hoses,do they get hot ,both or one?They should be hot,if not flush the heater core directly with a hose,back and forth at each hose connection.
2nd check,clamp off the top rad hose and force the hot water through the heater and check heat output.If there is heat with top rad hose clamped change the thermostat,it's either leaking or defective,new or not.

Check to make sure the coolant level is full. Make sure the thermostat is working, you temp gauge will read low if it is not. Most likely the heater core is plugged, very common on the durangos. You can have a service done to the heater core called back flushing. It may not be a bad idea to flush the cooling system at the same time especially if it has never been done. If you get more heat after the flush drive for a week or so and then have it flushed again. If the heat is now adequate you just saved yourself 5 or 6 hundred dollars. If the heat is still not good than you will need to replace the heater core.

does the heater work good, like real HOT when the truck is HOT? if not, flush the heater core with a water hose, both directions. Now when the truck is HOT open the hood and feel the air coming thorough the radiator, it should be HOT. if its not, the radiator may be plugged. If the mechanic has a Temp Gun, have him check the radiator temp, it should be uniformly HOT if you find cold spots (like if the radiator is 200f and there are places that are 150f) the radiator is plugged and "flushing" will do nothing.

replace the thermostant again this time get a hotter temp thermostant and buy it from the dealer, the other thing is that these cars are known for the temp sensors being bad this would give you the false reading on the gauge but would not affect the heat, if its taaking a long time then i would replace the stant and this time or before replacing the stant i want you to flush out the heater core, remove the hoses from the heatercore and use a water hose to flush water through the heater core, a plugged core will not throw heat or will start to allow water to flow when it gets good and hot to flow through the retricted core due to rust and crud, try the flush first and then try a new temp sensor if the flush helps the heat, hope this is helpful good luck.

You just might have an air lock. Try bleeding the system from the heater hose at the firewall. Losen one hose a little, and at operating temp. open slightly to let air out. You will lose some coolant, but just refill the rad. Now, both hoses should get hot.

New thermostat,waterpump,coolant,block flushed rad flushed still overheats and coolant seems not to be circulating rad and bottom hose cold, top hoses extra hot


only the top hose gets hot m8 means the therm is opening up like its needs to do. i think your temp sensor/ sending unit is on the fritz

is the rad fan working??

Radiator whines and overheats when not moving


Have someone flush cooling system & check condition of rad for debris in front of rad & blow or spray it out as necessary. Next time it runs hot, turn your heater temperature up high, blower fan on high, and see if gauge starts to come back down a little. If it does, my guess is your rad needs replacing, or at least consider trying a good reverse flushing of the system first, then rad.
