Question about Chrysler Concorde

2 Answers

The check engine code came on, on my 2003 Chrysler Concorde LXI then the transmission suddenly down shifted on the highway when the speed fell below 40 mph. This caused the vehicle behind me to have to slow down suddenly. I pulled unto the shoulder then turned the engine off for about 15 seconds then restarted. I was able to drive it normally almost all the way to work before a re-occurrence, luckily I was a stop light which made it easier to shut off and restart the engine. Later that day I got a free diagnostic check at Auto zone, and the reader came up with two transmission related codes which I don't happen to remember offhand. The technician believes that the cause may be due to a relay or sensor and that it would require dropping the pan to gain access to. I am very handy in repairing my own vehicles and would challenge this if I could be pointed in the right direction. I would appreciate any advice that you can help me with. btw the transmission fluid is at the correct level. Thanks, Stephen

There are no transmission fluid leaks and there is no burnt smell, the fluid looks very good. I don't believe that this is a crankshaft/camshaft sensor issue because the vehicle starts right up. The problem that I am having is that the automatic transmission down shifts suddenly with the stick in the "D" position. Then it seems to drag along in first or second gear until I shut off and restart the engine which I believe resets something electronic within the transmission.

This sounds more like it, I will obtain the Haynes manual then verify the codes. Thanks for your help.

If you planing to do the task, I would recommend to go down to any auto part store and pick up Haynes auto repair book to help assist you with proper picture and instructions; will also show you many parts locations it a great bible I call it. The problems It sure sounds like your transmission is going into a "Fail Safe" mode. This can happen for several different reasons, caused by either internal transmission problems, or external control system problems. Internal transmission causes of this problem can be faulty solenoids or stuck valves.External control systems can also cause wrong gear starts. Two common external causes are:

  • a complete loss of power or ground to the control system.
  • a fail safe protection strategy initiated by the computer to protect itself or the transmission from an observed problem.
Both the "No Power" problem and the "Fail Safe Strategy" problem result in the same wrong gear start condition. The gears that you get in each shifter position are the same.
SO, I guess the first thing I would do is check the Transmission Control Module (TCM) for stored codes.
To call up codes, cycle ignition switch on, off, on, off and on within 5 seconds. Stored codes will be indicated by flashes of the power loss/check engine lamp. The codes will be indicated as two digit numbers, with a four second pause between codes. An example of a code is as follows:
  • Power Loss/Check Engine Lamp illuminated for approximately 2 to 3 seconds as a bulb check, then turns off.
  • Lamp flashes 2 times, pauses, then flashes 6 times.
  • Lamp pauses for approximately 4 seconds.
  • Lamp flashes 3 times, pauses, then flashes 1 time.
  • My guess would be faulty TCM, Transmission Control Module, I would get one from a ebay or junk yard for 40-50 bucks and it common problems to many Chrysler's products.

Maybe with put in some Chrysler transmission fluid and it seems to solve the problem, also check your the camshaft and crank position sensors, I thinking that needing replaced.

All Chrysler four-speed and six-speed automatic transmissions* are very sensitive to the quality of the transmission fluid. Only use the ATF+4 in these transmissions. Do not use Dexron or Mercon.

Review this Changing Automatic Transmission Fluid

I hope help you with this. Good luck.

Where is the speed sensor located on a 2002 Chrysler Concorde

Beware speed sensors seldom fail. Chrysler products transmission have a limp mode where they only shift to second gear when something goes wrong and many times when nothing is wrong. If the speedometer fails it goes to limp. If an OBD scan gives a transmission code sometimes clearing the code will end the problem. When driving if the transmission shifts one time as it should the sensor is working.

Chrysler concord 3.2 lxi 1999,speedometer does not working, cheak engine light on and the transmision does not shifting . did any one know why and how I can fixed ? Thanks

Sounds like a transmission output speed sensor. The first thing you need to do is pull trouble codes. Most likely the PCM will have a p0700 code which means there are codes in the trans control module. To scan that you will need a multifunction scan tool. You local parts store may be able to help you with that or you may need to swing buy your local shop (they usually charge for this). If the TCM code has anything to do with the rear output speed sensor than I wouldn't hesitate to replace it. These are very common in all Chrysler transmissions. It will be located on the drivers side of the transmission towards the rear of the transmission. It will have a two wire connector, is usually a light tan/cream/yellowish color, and you'll need a 1" socket or wretch to remove or install it. Good luck, let me know if you have any further questions.

I have a 2000 Chrysler Concorde LXi. The check engine light came on while accelerating and at that point the transmission would not shift to the next higher gear. Eventually it did shift and ran normal...

That's telling you that something is wrong and needs to be checked and/or repaired. If you stop at one of the bigger autoparts stores, they will scan it for you for FREE, and let you know what code is coming up. That code should point everyone in the direction of problem. Without retrieving that code, you'll be wasting time and money on guessing. Once they tell you what the code(s) is, they may recommend a part to fix it. If your uncomfortable with that advice, get back to us with that code(s) and we can better advise you . With that said, transmissions now days, are expensive and fly apart pretty easily compared to the transmissions from years back, so I wouldn't advise going any further than a place to have it diagnosed properly first.

When I first start driving the transmission work fine ,then when I slow down it shifts into 2nd. and won't shift up again. So i stop the car , start it again and then it shifts fine again until I slow down...

I was told by a Chrysler tech that it's the shift solenoid located in the trans. pan. There are 4 of them and you have to have it checked to see which one. You don't want to replace all 4. About $80.00 at a dealer! Mine does the same thing. 2004 Concorde lxi.

There is a faulty sensor or valve. Sounds like a valve. The best thing to do, is take it somewhere that can diagnose the trouble code. Autozone can I believe, and they can tell you exactly what's going on with it.

97 concorde with 3.5 engine @ 40 to 45 mph it starts bucking .

Computer firmware needs upgrade

Take your car to a Chrysler dealer shop and have them update the transmission program. As your tranny wears it loses it shift point and stutters between 40 - 45 mph looking for the right gear to change to..Had same problem in 94 Concorde and 94 T&C minivan.Reprogramming tranny fixed both cars.
