Question about 2005 Chrysler 300

Chysler 300 won't shift out of park

I tried pressing the manual release under the transmission cover, nothing. I tried gently rocking the car back and forth, it remained stuck

Sounds like the lock button on the shifter has become disengaged

Pull the cover off the base of the shifter and check that the release lever is connected and the connection pins from the shift lever to the transmission are tight. Safely block the car up and look underneth the car at the transmision looking for loose parts.

Shift - interlock system problem .
Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control System
The automatic transmission shift lock control system is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the engine is running. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of PARK position. The system consists of the following components:
• The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid
• The automatic transmission park lock solenoid
• The automatic transmission shift lock control switch
• The transmission range switch
With the ignition in the ON position, battery voltage is supplied to the automatic transmission shift lock control switch. The circuit continues through the normally-closed switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. The transmission range switch provides a path to ground for the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid in the PARK position. With the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid energized the shift lever is mechanically locked in the PARK position. When the driver presses the brake pedal, the contacts in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch open, de-energizing the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. This allows the shift lever to move from the PARK position. When the shift lever is out of the PARK position the controlled ground contacts in the transmission range switch open. This prevents the automatic transmission shift lock solenoid from energizing when the vehicle is out of the PARK position.

Replaced brakepedal switch brake lights work but i cant get it to shift out of park now?


brake lights do have to come on to shift out of park.make sure they do come on.also check for broken shifter cable,try rocking it back @ forht, sometimes the cable on transmission bind when under certain situations.rock it back @ forth while attempting to shift out of park. hope this helps!!!

If it is an automatic transmission where you have to hold down the brake to start it and it doesn't start,it could be the sensor,or there is probably a relay to tell the start system that the brake is depressed.You didn't mention if it starts or not so if it does(sounds like it does though) start and you can't shift,it is probably linkage between the shifter and the transmission.Good luck! My 2005 chrysler 300 wont shift into gear. It's in park and it wont go into reverse.


One reason for that I have experienced is when the torque on the parking pawl inside the transmission is particularly great, such as if you put the trans in park on a steep incline. If that is the case, then if you can recruit a husky by-stander or two to push on which ever end of the car is low so as to take the pressure off the pawl it will release. Even on level ground there might be something that is putting torque on the front wheels, so gently rocking the car back and forth might free it up.
The other thing to is the shifter lock has broke and needs to be replaced but there is a over ride for you to unlock it but you need to remove the center console where the shifter is to get to it. How do you override the transmission shift lock on a 1998 Volkswagen Beetle, when it's stuck in Park?


On most cars of that year and newer you have to have the engine running and be pressing down on the brake pedal to shift out of park. If that does not work try having some one rock the car forward and back while you try to shift out of park. If the rocking trick works in the future while still in gear and holding the brakes set your parking break then shift to park. This will keep the weight of the car of the parking lock in the transmision and prevent the problem from reoccurring. Good Luck!!

2008 Chevy Impala transmission shift lever locked up...


I had this problem and its common on the impala. There is a manual release button under the shifter trim. Remove the trim and look down and on the passenger side you will see a silver button near the bottom. With the shifter in park push in the button and this will release the shifter. You can drive the car as long as you don't put it back in park. If you do just push in the button and release it again. My problem was a broken wire in the shifter cable. You won't find this release button in the owners manual. After mine was repaired I drilled a inch and one half hole in the passenger side of the console opposite the level of the button in case I had future problems. Just reach in with your finger and push in the button to release the shifter.
