How can the battery explode and then look fine? Were you driving the vehicle when this happened or was it just sitting? Please explain.

What you need to determine is if your alternator is over charging the battery. The voltage regulator is internal. If you take it to a parts store nearby they should be able to test the output. (Most Advance and Auto-zone do this at no charge in the hopes of selling you a new battery or alternator.) Odds are based on your description, the alt. is overcharging. If you have a battery with cap plates, carefully open them and pour in some bottled water, however depending on the age of the battery, it may not be very strong after it was over charged.

It probably just boiled over, check battery voltage in engine off it should read 12.7-13.2 volts/then with engine running chk for 13.7-14.5 both ball park figures, if in the high 14s you could have a defective regulator in your alternator causing over charge

Possible electrical problem?

Diagnosing something from a description is far from an exact science, but this is what it sounds like to me may have happened. If your battery was not tie down it could have gotten against something hot or moving (like a pulley), or what ever was rattling may have created a spark somehow and caused the battery to exploded, either way the battery fluid spashing onto hot metal could explain the cloud of white smoke, as you did not mention seeing any flames.

Is the battery dead? Your alternator may be bad. If you drove it last night you may have driven on battery power and not realized it. You should have gotten some kind of warning message. Need to know if the battery is dead.

While driving the vehicle last night the egr valve exploded. replaced it late last night. drove it today and the same thing happened. car needed towed. what will cause the egr to explode and how do i fix...

EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation. If the EGR valve exploded, then there is most likely a restriction in the system. You may need to remove the valve and look for a build up of carbon or burnt oil. the process may get time consuming as you may need to disassemble parts of the engine.

1998 Ford Explorer completely dead

If you don't have any electric functions working I would have to say that the battery is dead.  Where the lights left on last night or a door open?  You can take the battery out and take it to your local auto parts store and they can test it for you to make sure it's not dead and if it's not, then you can have them charge it for you.  Let me know if you need anything else.
