Intermediate Starting Problems

Every so often, when I try and start the car, I click a continuous clicking sound. After that, I need to re-set the clock as if the battery had been totally disconnected. When I try it again, it starts right up. Any ideas on what the issue may be?

Clean all your connections at the battery. Also check and the condition of the cables and terminals.

The most common cause of a "No Crank" condition is a bad starter solenoid. The starter solenoid is a large coil that, most often, sits on top of the starter and engages the Bendix drive with the flywheel and sends power to the starter. If the internal coil goes bad, the solenoid won't engage the Bendix or turn the starter on. This condition will not cause any noticeable noise other than the clicking.

Continuous clicking noise when trying to start car

Sounds like a bad starter solenoid.

Something cheaper to try first, though, is a starter relay:

Your ignition switch is going bad. The strange noise is the starter remaining engaged and locked to the flywheel. Your best bet is to have the starter tested at your local auto parts store, to deduce that it is not, in fact, your starter.

When I try starting my 1987 Mazda rx7 it clicks

Check the battery, have a load test done on the battery, and check the connections at the battery and the battery post, make sure they are shiny clean, then of course check the alternator,to make sure it is charging enough,13.65 volts to 14.25 volts, any less replace the alternator,If all this checks out good, replace the starter.

WIPERS

My wife complained about the same thing on her BMW. After driving it on a long road trip in the rain, we realized that if you just turn it to the first setting, the wipers automatically speed up, and slow down as rain increases/decreases.
