Question about 2004 Buick Rainier

Wheel Vibration I've got a 2004 pontiac aztek, that experincing a vibration in the front passenger wheel. The pitch increases with speed. The brakes are about 10K old.

Front hub assemblys are a problem on this car. I have put two in in one year. If you have your tires balamced, and it still is there, the its a hub assembly. Is your service engine light on at all?

you don't say where the noise is. that is important to give a clue where the issue is. when stopping on the brakes 3 things happen. you press the pedal and the abs pump starts pumping fluid. the second is the brake capilers start pushing on the rotors to slow the car. the rotors are attached to the wheels and that stops the car. so if the rotors are warped you will feel a vibration in the steering wheel when stepping on the brakes. if its your foot feeling the pump working that is normal for abs pumping. you should feel it and holding the pedal will keep it working and stop you from skidding if everything is working correctly

What would cause my Aztek to make loud grinding, groaning and now sounds like something is broken in the rear while driving?


My hunch would be rear wheel bearings. Lift and spin each wheel listening for noise is all I can suggest at this point.

Take your tires back off and see if the brake calibers and brake shoes are lined up correctly,maybe the brake calibers are sticking.

If a hub bearing was bad, it almost always would make noise, more so when changing lanes at higher speed. Outer CV joints make a loud low pitched rattle when turning (corners). Inner CV joints raise hell at high speed- bad shake! Sway links affect cornering and clunk when hitting rough patches of road surface.
Is the vibration worse at 65 than at 50? If so, you are dealing with a wheel balance situation. Find an old time front end shop that will check the balance on the vehicle. You will have to turn off the traction control to do this or use an on-the-car wheel balancer.
If you feel it at some low speeds at it comes back at other higher speeds, then you are dealing with tire roundness. Possible more than 1. More common than we would like.

I get a vibration in my stearing wheel when i press on my breaks when going above 60mph.


From what you have described the disc rotors on the vehicle are distorted and could be fairly badly distorted if they have been subjected to excessive temperatures at any time.

This will translate into a pulsation in the brake pedal - especially noticeable when you brake at speeds above about 40mph. At 60 mph - as you found - you cannot miss it. At higher speeds you will also get some vibration through the steering wheel once you brake.

The disc rotors will need to be examined and removed from the car for machining or total replacement. They may be too worn or distorted for machining as the manufacturers specify a minimum safe disc rotor thickness. Disc rotors don't last the life of the car and replacing them is a fairly routine exercise and not usually expensive except on many European cars and on many prestige brands.
The brake pads should also be replaced at the same time unless replaced recently and have minimal wear. The operation of the brake calipers should also be checked.

If you had a wheel balance problem on the car (rectified with a decent re-balance of both front wheels) you would find a constant vibration through the steering wheel at a given speed usually above about 45mph. What you have complained of is vibration only upon braking plus a pulsation through the brake pedal whilst braking.
However if you are also noticing a constant vibration through the steering wheel at or above a given speed when cruising you need to have the front wheels re-balanced and the front suspension and steering checked for problems.
If you have uneven tyre wear you will also need to have the front wheels re-aligned. If a front wheel alignment was not done on the car in the last 12000 miles it will need a wheel alignment in any event.

If you have vibration in your steering wheel, I would have your CV joints checked out or it might be your front wheel bearings. The vibration coming from those two problems would get a little more intense as your speed increases. Are your tires in good shape? Did it vibrate before you got your brakes done?

Low level growling noise at rt. front wheel increases with speed. No change if in or out of gear. Can start hearing noise begining about 38 mph. very slight vibration Car has 77,000 miles and is well...


first rotate the tires see if there is a change. If that does not have a desirable effect there may be a worn wheel bearing,take note if the sound or vibration gets louder as you turn a corner, try left turns as well as right turns if the noise increases it is a wheel bearing.

Humming noise starting @ 35MPH with increasing tone as speed excells or declines. Very faint vibration can be felt in the steering wheel.


Check the wheel bearings. Does the pitch of the noise change as you weave the wheel back and forth at 35?

I have front end vibration that is not caused by alignment. New tires on all four wheels but still have alot of front end vibration. Car is a 2004 Hyundai Tiburon.

Front wheel hub assemblies and bearings control the position of, and reduce the resistance of, vehicle wheels in contact with the pavement. When they fail, front wheels may not be kept in position and vibration and noise usually develop. Symptoms that normally develop as a result of these worn parts include:
  • A humming, rumbling or growling noise which increases with acceleration or as the vehicles turns
  • Vibration felt in the steering wheel, which changes with vehicle speed or as the vehicle turns
  • Looseness or excessive play in the steering wheel (especially while driving over rough road surfaces)
  • A loud, constant grinding noise when driving the vehicle (heard in the most severe cases of a wheel bearing failure)
  • Pulling to one side when braking.
  • Roughness - with the vehicle of the ground, roughness or vibration when rotating the wheel
  • Looseness - with the vehicle off the ground, looseness when wiggling the wheel back and forth (Looseness may also indicate a worn ball joint)
  • Excessive brake pedal play can also indicate sloppy or excessively loose wheel bearings
  • ABS failure in the system may be related to failure of the ABS sensor in the hub assembly or the internal sensor in the wheel bearing
