In most cases it is a defective temp-sender switch for coolant gauge only. If you have the 2.2 engine, it will be located near or under the thermastat housing.

Sounds like the thermostat is not closing. Likely needs replacing. Charlie

First thing you need to do obviously, is check your coolant level. If coolant level has been checked and all is well, then I'd look at replacing the thermostat.

Be sure to bleed air out well in system after changing thermostat, and make sure heater is on while doing so, and adding coolant back into the system.

Sounds like you may have a head gasket that has gone bad. with the engine cold remove the radiator cap and start the engine. If there is a constant peculation of small bubble coming out of the radiator and the smell like gas or exhaust you have a bad head gasket.

2000 cavalier heat only works while idling

most likely it's a bad thermostat that is stuck open and the engine doesn't warm up properly - which might explain a bit about the heat issue as no heat builds up in the heater core, this can be done yourself - if I remember right (was over a year ago) it was only $9 at O'Reily/Murray's plus coolant - just be careful with the coolent as it's very toxic and if there's particles or looks very dark do not reuse (if you've not had it done before, it's probably best to just replace it anyway) and you should dispose of the used coolent properly (Do Not just dump it down a drain)

Temperature gauge is fluctuating while driving.

I'm thinking the coolnat level is low, and this might be caused by a bad head gasket - At least $800 to fix - sorry.

Temperature Gauge Always On Cold

As long as your gauge is still moving up, there's no real problem. You have heat coming from the heater. It's only a problem if it's getting too hot. What's going on is that you don't let the vehicle run long enough, and it's so cold outside that the engine stays cold. It raises in temp when your stopped because there's no airflow through the radiator. The thermostat just heats up the engine block, and won't change the reading on the gauge. When this goes bad your car will overheat in just a few miles.

Overheating and heater not work

there is a valve on the water pump and one on the thermostat housing open those up one at a time until you get a little bit of antifreeze come out then tighten them back up. All you will be doing is bleeding the air out of the cooling system. my car was doing the same thing after I changed my thermostat.
