Question about 1994 GMC Jimmy
It could be many things - the most common is failure of one of the wheel sensors, (Four total) one located on each wheel; that determine if the wheel is locking up (skidding) when the brake is applied - these often break or fail and must be replaced in order for the ABS to function properly - when the light is illuminated on the dash, the brakes are safe, and function as normal non-ABS brakes do. I have seen where GM ABS control units also sometimes fail and they are rather expensive to replace (unless you can find one at a salvage yard). I have also seen where sometimes "resetting" the control unit light can solve the problem as well (If it is control unit related, and not sensor related) - There is a black "box" near the brake master cylinder (under the hood in the engine compartment, on the left -drivers - side) that is positioned vertically and has about 50 wires attached to it - If you unplug this unit (you may simply unplug it, or you may also have to remove a bolt in the center of the connector that holds it in place) for about 10 minutes (You can sometimes disconnect the battery to accomplish this as well, but you'll lose your clock and radio stations and it may idle funny for a bit), then plug it back in (after 10 minutes disconnected), this will "reset" the ABS light and sometimes put out the light permanently- unless of course it is a wheel sensor failure or other failure - The wheel sensors have a specific resistance and can be tested independently if necessary - They also utilize a ring that rotates near the sensor to assist in determining movement - this ring can break as well, so a visual inspection may help you locate the problem --- ABS systems are quite advanced, and without a factory diagnostic tools, they are difficult to repair at best - They read and store trouble codes which make troubleshooting much easier if you have the right tools, so unfortunately, a trip to a trusted technician may be in order if resetting the light and visual inspection of each sensor and ring brings nothing.... and if you need to unplug each sensor and check with an ohm-meter to determine resistance, you can usually find it (resistance numbers) on the internet....Hope that helps some....Good luck.

When light comes on, it is simply to notify you that something in your ABS system is not working properly, such as a sensor is malfunctioning for example. When a sensor is not working properly, it may or likely will cause one or more wheels to lock up in a panic situation when stopping hard, thus creating a dangerous situation. Different problems will cause different braking characteristics. It could be something as simple as mud covering a sensor, or something worse in the system. Not something you should ignore for sure, as it could be something very seriously wrong, so have it checked a.s.a.p. and go from there. One thing I always do, is hit a dirt or gravel road or someones long driveway, and carefully apply brakes hard to see if any wheels lock up. If one locks up, that's the wheel I inspect for trouble first. Careful if you try it, the vehicle can whip around quick, so be prepared to let up on pedal quick to regain control, and do it at a slower more controllable speed.
