2004 Dodge Caravan fan relay getting hot when van is off

We were in a minor accident with some damage to the bumber. The fan relay has come loose but doesn't look damaged and the wires seem fine. But the fans kept running long enough while my wife was at work to kill the battery. Also after jump starting the van and charging the battery the relay gets hot to the touch with the van off. I am hoping someone knows the voltages of the 4 wires that run into the relay or if the relay getting hot is a sign of it being bad now.

Probably the relay contacts have been shorted out.

Replace it ($12) from an auto supply store (AutoZone)...

I believe that the A/C or Headlight Relay switches are the same as the fan relay, test one to see if it fixes the problem.

Hope this helps!

Although the accident may have not damaged the relay physically, it is run by the BCM (body control module) which is very common to fail or surge voltages after collisions.

go to www.alldatadiy.com and register you vehicle specifics. Then find the wiring schematic and flow chart for the symptoms you are having. You'll be able to find all of the info you seek there.

Hope that helps.

Remove the front number. Ou will see it riveted to the bumper frame of the drivers side. If you remove the screws that holt the top of the bumper to the upper radiator cover and gently pull back on the grill part of the bumper you will see it.

yea dodge did a recall on the solid state relays, the next thing would be to replace the coolant temp sensor and the thermostat, that seems to help at least some peoples vans that i have worked on,and then some of the vans of that year i have experienced shorts in the wiring either from the fans back or from the ignition on forward.

Our 1999 dodge grand caravan radiator fans don't come on and our van overheats. we have to hot wire the fans directly to the battery. We also need to know where the relay is

it may be the temperature sensor that activates the fans is faulty & needs to be replaced or it could be a loose wire or connection check the wiring & connectors......hope this helps......cheers.

Fan will not turn on van getting hot

use a test light to check for power at the fan connector when the engine is running and hot. If voltage is there, replace fan. If not, interrogate fan relay and relay socket for additional troubleshooting.

Please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r6022358-relay_check . These are generic instructions. If you get stuck or need specific instructions for your car, please get back to me with model, year and engine info.

Electric radiator fan won't come on when engine gets hot

I had the same problem. Check the fans relay behind the front grill, in front of the radiator, more accesible if you take the headlight (driver's side) out.
