Not if you aren't racing. Intake manifolds are designed for intended usage. Racing manifolds have different runner lengths and diameters which have been tuned for high-RPM use, as well as larger injectors and throttle bodies, etc, for the purpose of racing. Now i would personally never take a Pep Boys mechanic's word for anything, as they hardly even sell car parts there anymore. Why do they think you need a new manifold? If you do, in actuality, need a new manifold, then you should get one from a junkyard and buy the necessary new gaskets and replace stock with stock. And consult with a real mechanic, not Manny, Moe and Jack. They stopped working on cars about twenty years ago.

Good luck,
matt

I got a diagnostic at Pep Boys that confirmed my suspicion of the need to replace the spark plugs. The technician inferred that it may be too technical for me since the intake manifold needed removal...

It is true that on some vehicles that you
need to remove the upper intake to get
to the spark plugs

You can do it

Also there is no diagnostic test that would
indicate spark plugs were an issue

Do it your self if you want it done right

He was referring to removing the ignition
coils to get to the plugs. Only one scew

They were just pitching work for the shop

Need intake manifold bolt torque specs

Your best bet is to go to a major chain auto parts store (Pep Boys, Advance, Auto Zone, O'Reilly's, etc.) and purchase a vehicle specific repair manual.

It'll contain the info you are looking for. Besides just the torque, don't over look the sequence of tightening.

Have a free problem code scan done at Autozone, or Pep Boys, and write them down. Sounds like you have a sensor acting up, but hopefully that scan will narrow it down. Let us know.

YOU NEED TO REPLACE THE UPPER INTAKE MANIFOLD. ALSO, YOU WILL NEED TO REPLACE THE LOWER INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKETS. THIS IS A MANUFACTURING FLAW. THE PLASTIC INTAKE CRACKS CAUSING AN INTERNAL COOLANT LEAK. YOU CAN RESEARCH THIS ON LINE.

My intake gasket is leaking how do i replace it? 94 toyota camry

It would probably be very beneficial for you to purchase a Haynes Repair Manual that will walk you through step by step for just about every repair mechanical and otherwise that you would need to undertake now and in the future. Toyota makes a very durable machine but eventually things wear down. I know the manuals can be purchased at most of your auto part store chains such as Auto Zone, Discount Auto Parts, Pep Boys or something similar. Tou will find a range of years included in several books for your specific year, make and model.Cost is around $20.00 They have torque specs and all other specs you will need. Another manual that is good but I don't see much of anymore is Chiltons. You can also look at a book store if that is closer to where you live but I'm not sure. Also could look on ebay possibly.
Just to mention this. I don't think that your oil would be leaking from the intake manifold gasket. The intake manifold distributes the air/fuel mixture from a throttle body which is like a carb only it uses a single fuel injector to control the fuel. Or, it would be a plenum that only handles the air distribution to the cylinders, with an injector for the fuel delivery located by each cylinder. Fuel and air or air under a vacuum environment An intake manifold leak is usually accompanied by erratic engine idle speeds that constantly change or are too high or too low. I would check the valve cover gasket, a clogged pcv valve, or another small component fastened in the area of the leak. Oil leaks can sometimes be difficult to track.
Hope this helps,
Matt.
