Question about 1992 Jeep Wrangler

1 Answer

My 92, 2.5L, 4C, yj desperatly needs a new transmission. i'm wondering what to look for? i'm not about to put the same type back in because their just not tough enough. something i could bolt right in without adapters or fabrication would be ideal. Thanks Nicholas

Any stick transmission would out last 5 automatics.
All you need to do is put a clutch pedal back in, with parts from a junkyard. You would need the flywheel also.

No such thing as an easy or inexpensive fix when it comes to a transmission. Since the unit needs to come out and apart in order to do any internal repair, it's rather foolish to do anything except a complete rebuild. Don't forget...Unlike an engine that has many components on the outside, your transmission has virtually everything inside. Have a reputable trans shop do the work. They will check the transmission and the transfer case and make the necessary repair recommendations.

We have burnt the clutch out and are wondering how hard it is to put a new one in?

This requires you removing the cv shafts, taking loose the engine/transmission mounts, unbolt the transmission from the engine, removing the transmission, taking the pressure plate and clutch disc off the flywheel on the engine, then putting everything back once the new clutch parts are put back on. Looking a day of work to complete.

How to remove/install a 4 cylinder jeep Yj

If you need to ask, you have never done one. I suggest that you get a chiltons or haynes manual to guide you through it. tips are: use large bolts without heads to guide the transmission back onto bellhousing so you don't need to hang the unit on the clutch disc and risk bending it. Change the pilot bearing in the back of the crankshaft if it's the least bit worn, be very careful not to damage the crank sensor on the bellhousing, and use a good pilot shaft when aligning the disc inside the clutch cover. spread some white lube on the input shaft and front guide collar on the transmission and make sure the throwout bearing has sufficient grease in the inside groove.
good luck!!!

My 89 Jeep YJ manual will not go in to reverse while running

Problem is likely either a worn shift fork or bad synchro (both inside the transmission) It's unlikely that you have a clutch problem otherwise the problem would be with first and reverse and shifting other gears would also be difficult.

Manual transmission grinds/crackles in 5th gear

The syncronizers and blocker ring are damaged some stores like auto zone have a super synthetic gear lube I had this problem in my 95 wrangler and the problem went away. Its going to be hard to find tranny parts for that car I just put a new tranny in from the junk yard with 70k miles for $200 its in perfect operating condition.

What type of transmission do i have?

Your Wrangler is a YJ and the model is an "S". A Wrangler manufactured in 1987 through 1995 are all YJ's and then from 1997 through 2006 are all TJ's. The new Wrangler models are dubbed JK's.
