I've gotten as far as removing the large nut on the axle but can't seem to get the hub and rotor assembly to come off. There looks like something like a washer with tiny holes in it may still be holding it. I've tried to pry it and even hit the rotor to loosen it but nothing seems to work.

Re: 1990 f150 4x4 front axle removal
I'm not positive what type axle you have but the order of parts should be the anti lock free running hub assembly, a lock washer then the wheel bearing lock nut. The lock nut could look like a thick washer with 5 or 6 holes in it. But depending on your front axle you may have a rotor and hub assembly that's a single unit or they could be separate. If they are separate then you may need a sledge hammer to get the rotors off. Ford's front rotors can be a real pain in the a$$ to get loose. Regardless which type you have if the order of what you have taken off so far matches what I said then washer is probably the locking nut. The only way to get it off is a special spanner wrench or a punch and hammer. If you are still uncertain about it let me know and give the axle make and type and I'll be glad to help. Good luck If

The front wheel bearing is a hub and bearing assembly. To remove you will....
1. Remove the tire
2. Remove the axle nut. You can put a punch in the fins of the rotor to keep the assembly from turning while you rmove the nut. You can can do the same thing when you torque the axle nut.
3. Remove the caliper and rotor.
4. Unplug the abs sensor if equipped.
5. Remove the three bolts that hold the hub to the knuckle.
6. Rmove the hub.
If you need torque specs let me know and i'll get them for you. It is absolutely critical that you torque the axle nut to the proper spec!
jack up vehicle wheel in question and install jack stand.remove wheel. Unbolt 2 caliper bracket bolts and pry caliper assembly up off brake rotor and hang off to the side with bungee.remove rotor . remove large axle nut. From the back of the hub remove hub bolts most commonly 15mm.Using a slide hammer style wheel puller the hub can be removed. if all you have is a big hammer hit the hub back and forth side to side until it can be removed. Bolt in new hub assembly and torque bolts.Install axle nut and torque. install rotor and caliper. reinstall wheel and torque.
Remove center hub cap. Remove large nut behind hub cap.Lift wheel assembly off ground. Remove wheel. Remove brake calipher assembly by taking out larger bolts from back of calipher. Remove brake rotor. Pull axle toward middle of vehicle, you may have to tap axle end with small hammer being careful not to damage threads on end of axle. Remove three bolts from back, bearing housing should come out to the front.
About an hour a side...This is the whole job and pictures....
The hub and wheel bearing unit is serviced as a complete assembly. Replacement of the front drive hub and bearing assembly can be done without having to remove the steering knuckle from the vehicle. However, if the hub/bearing assembly is frozen to the steering knuckle, removal of the steering knuckle is required.
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Remove the cotter pin from the end of the stub axle. Remove the nut lock and spring washer. With the brakes applied, loosen, but do NOT remove the axle nut and washer with the vehicle still on the ground or damage to the wheel bearing will result.
Raise and safely support the vehicle. Remove the wheel.
Remove the front brake caliper assembly from the steering knuckle assembly and support from the strut assembly using a strong piece of wire.
Remove the front brake rotor from the hub/bearing assembly.
Remove the retaining nut and washer from the halfshaft stub axle.
Remove the ABS wheel speed sensor from the steering knuckle.
Remove the 4 hub and bearing assembly mounting bolts from behind the steering knuckle.
Remove the hub and bearing assembly from the steering knuckle.
Thoroughly clean the mating surfaces of the steering knuckle and the hub and bearing assembly of any foreign material or nicks so the surfaces are clean and smooth.
Install the new hub and bearing assembly and tighten the mounting bolts in a crisscross pattern to 45 ft. lbs. (65 Nm). Be sure the hub and bearing assembly is seated squarely against the front steering knuckle.
Install the disc brake rotor.
Install the brake caliper assembly onto the steering knuckle.
Install the axle washer and nut. Tighten but do not torque.
Install the ABS wheel speed sensor.
Install the wheel and lug nuts. Torque the lug nuts, in sequence, to 95 ft. lbs. (129 Nm).
Lower the vehicle. Do NOT roll the vehicle until the axle nut has been properly torqued or damage to the front wheel bearings will result.
With the vehicle's brakes applied, torque the axle nut to 180 ft. lbs. (244 Nm). Install the spring washer, nut lock and a new cotter pin. Wrap the cotter pin prongs tightly around the axle nut lock.
Reconnect the negative battery cable. Check the wheel alignment.

Removing a hub/bearing assembly
If the hub/bearing is "frozen" to the steering knuckle, separate the ball joint and lightly tap on the hub/bearing from behind
The hub/bearing assembly should free itself from the steering knuckle
Replacing the front wheel bearing/hubs can be a big job for the inexperianced. Briefly...
Remove brake caliper assembly, do not remove brake line.
Remove caliper bracket.
Remove brake rotor.
Unplug ABS sensor.
Remove the large axle nut.
Press axle out of bearing (may need special tool)
Remove the 3 bearing bolts and remove bearing.
Raise vehicle and remove wheels. Disconnect brakeli ne from caliper (if necessary). Remove caliper.
On models with free wheeling hub, set control handl e to FREE position. On all models, remove hub cover, bolt/washer and hub body. Use tapered punch to open slits of conical washers. Remove axle shaft
snap ring (if equipped).
Straighten tabs of outer lock washer. Using Spindle Socket (09607-60020), remove lock nut, lock washer
and adjusting nut. Remove thrust washer and outer b earing. Remove axle hub and rotor. Remove grease se al and inner bearing. Press hub bolts out of axle hub. Remove retaining bolts, and separate rotor from hu b.
The vehicle will need to raised on the left (drivers) side and supported. Remove the tire, then the brake caliper assy. Remove the rotor, then remove the axle nut located in the center of the hub assy. Remove the hub/bearing retaining bolts, and then the hub assy. Some times it is corroded into the steering knuckle assy. and will not seem to come out. If this happens, install the axle nut, and wearing safety glasses, pound onto the hub flange from the inside to the outside, until it comes out of the knuckle assy. Then remove the hub assy. Clean the knuckle hole where the bearing with 120 grit sand paper, so the hub/bearing assy will go into the knuckle without damage. Torque the axle nut to specs. Clean the inside of the rotor, where the hub meets it, so it sits flat against the new hub. Install the rotor, caliper assy. Install the wheel and torque the lug nuts to 100 ft pounds. Road test about 5 miles and recheck the lug nuts.
