Rear Defroster Problem

I have a 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix Gt. The rear defroster does not work. The light on the HVAC doesn't even come on. How can I get it working. Expensive to fix?

1 st of all check all the fuses if all are good it may be the switch itself .......if you are referring to just the defroster ensure both connections are connected to th rear window if there are any breaks in the defroster lines as you will they sell a metal fill type repair kit not expensive and with the use of tape and this mixture you can easily repair the breaks in the defroster lines ........but first ck your fuses and connections maby determine with the use of a test light and check for power at both the switch and the rear wire connections for power to them otherwise it is most likely the switch

Testimonial: "Thank you. There's power at the fuse and power up to the switch is good. No power at the rear tab or grid so I guess I need a new switch."

have you checked for rower to the switch as well as power to the rear defroster wire?

  • Anonymous Sep 13, 2009

if there is power to the rear tab the issue will be the metallic lines that run through the maze ot reach the other sounds like tome a repair kit as i stated earlir is fairly inexpensive and a tape line to achieve the straight line while applying the mixture is suggested .especially if you have power to the switch and to the rear tab

What is the fix for a rear defroster that doesn't work?

when you push on the rear defroster button does it light up if so then you will have to use a test light and check for broken window grid wires on the rear window. you ground one end of the test light and using the other end start at one side of the window that lights it up then follow the grid line from one side to the other at 2 inch increments, the light should light up but get dimmer as you test the length of the grid, then go to the next grid line and repeat. when the light stops lighting this is were there is a break in the grid is and needs to be repaired. you can get window grid repair kits for this.

My heater works find but my rear defroster does not

Hi,
The rear defroster is controlled by a separate switch either on the dash or center console. The fuse may be blown or the rear wires that run across the window are damaged.

Use a multi-meter to test each wire to ensure continuity exists.

The HVAC cluster is not working. Sometimes when you turn off the car and restart it will start working. You cannot turn on the fan at any speed, cannot turn on the air conditioner, no rear window defroster...

The first step is to check all the fuses also check in the engine compartment for another fuse box. the problem may just be a fuse or may be the control.

Deforest system in 1997 grand prix needs to be fix

If you are referring to your rear window defroster not working when you press the button, you either have a blown fuse or are missing the fuse entirely.
Check your manual (sec 6 I believe): The fuse panel for your problem is located behind the glove box. You need to remove the front case but just pulling the handle to expose the fuses. The fuse is the same fuse that controls your heated seating, your hvac, rear defroster, and automatic lights. Let me know if this is the problem you where having and if this helps.. I just fixed this on my 97 Grand Prix SE 3 days ago!!!

Rear defroster not working

check your fuses first, with a test light, then if you have power there take your test light and turn on the rear defroster and probe the wires that connect to the rear defroster in the rear window.if you have power there it is a faulty defroster in the glass

Air conditioning/head lights

it is your ignition switch. Pontiac runs too much current through the switch for it to last very long. look on grandprix specific auto forums for an in depth look at this problem.
