Need to find somebody to hook a scanner to your car to read what the computer is saying (usally a number code) call your local auto parts store to see if they have one (auto zone usally free) if not dealers or mechnics have them, then go from there

Got a 1997 Chevy Suburban 5.7 liter 4 wheel drive and the check engine light is steadily on. I not too long ago changed the spark plugs and just changed the EGR VALVE. As I drive now it's running rough....

What you do when the engine light comes on is to stop the vehicle ---check the oil level and let it cool down then check the coolant level at the radiator. The engine light is the message to you that the CPU has found sensors /servos that have gone outside set parameters and your course of action then is to prove that the engine is safe then run the fault codes to find the recorded faults and fix them . use the code reader to reset the CPU to ensure that the faults are fixed.

There is a diagnostic procedure in the factory service repair manual for engine light lit ,no codes . Did you take it to ford dealer ? MIL - is referring to check engine , service engine soon etc...

  • MIL circuits
  • For Focus, Mustang, Town Car, Continental, LS6/LS8, Escape, Windstar, F-150, Expedition and Navigator/Blackwood:
  • Instrument Cluster, Section 413-01 of the Workshop Manual.
  • All Others:

SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator After the engine is started, the SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator will prove out for a duration of three seconds. If the instrument cluster does not receive a message from the PCM within five seconds, the instrument cluster will illuminate the SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator and log a diagnostic trouble code (DTC).

  • An indicator is inoperative/always on - SERVICE ENGINE SOON
  • Circuitry.
  • Bulb.
  • Instrument cluster.
  • PCM.
  • GO to Pinpoint Test P .

PINPOINT TEST P: AN INDICATOR IS INOPERATIVE/ALWAYS ON - SERVICE ENGINE SOON CONDITIONS DETAILS/RESULTS/ACTIONS P1 CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SERVICE ENGINE SOON INDICATOR ACTIVE COMMAND Trigger the HEC active command MIL.

Check engine is always on how to reset?

Cars have numerous sensors on the engine/drivetrain. The check engine light will come on if the cars electronic control unit (ECU ) detects a fault in a sensor. More often than not - you have to take to to a service place or dealer's service department. They hook up to a port - often inside the car. They then access the ECU memory to see what created the fault. Then - they will recommend a course of action - all at a cost of course unless the car is under warranty.

Service engine soon light came on, changed oil and of course changed filters checked gas cap all good any ideas

There are really too many things to list that can cause the service engine soon light to come on. I suggest you have your mechanic scan your vehicle to see what codes are present to cause the light to come on.

When service engine light comes on.What does that mean

consulted with a 5th grader, seems the course of action is to take it somewhere and have a mechanic service the engine. seems they have computer analyzers which they connect to a port on the car and it reveals an error code or codes that lead to a diagnosis of fault and plan for suggested repairs.

adults on the other hand tend to think that the light coming on should cause one to ask random strangers what this light could possibly mean. it is in a car and it does say service engine on it, but that is just not enough information to suggest a rational course of action.

Sounds like a service engine soon light. I would have the car scanned to see if there are any codes.

My dash lights come on at all different times, saying change oil soon, when i change it every 3000mi..and somtimes the service engine soon light comes on..then goes off, then comes on,what do i do

These looks like normal service indicators, I would have thought they would be reset via the diagnostics terminals by the servicing engineer.

Once of course, when the indicated unit had been serviced. I think you may have to go to a garage and get them reset but take care that whatever is indicated gets the attention it needs.

Service engine soon light on was fine yesterday morning in the afternoon it was on and is still on what could this mean

If the light was flashing when it came on, then it means your engine is misfiring.

A solid light can mean anything from a loose/faulty gas cap to a transmission issue.

This light comes on when the computer detects a fault of some sort in its diagnostic tests. If it keeps detecting this issue, the light will remain on. If the light turns off, then it has detected that the issue may no longer be present.

In order to find out what the exact reason was for your light, You need to have your car computer scanned to retrieve the code that the computer would have stored when the light triggered. Most garages will do this free of charge. The code will tell you what may have caused the light to initially turn on.
