Question about 2002 Toyota Camry

1 Answer

I have a 2002 Toyota Camry and my battery light just came on and its very hard to steer the car. As soon as the light came on, the steering instantly became hard. The car runs fine otherwise. Any ideas of what this might be? And will it be expensive or somewhat cheap to fix? Thank You

Thanks for the info. Other than the fact that it is difficult to steer, would it be safe enough to drive the car to the repair shop? Or will I do more damage to the vehicle and therefore need to have it towed?

It would appear you have thrown the drivebelt (four cylinder) or drivebelts (V6).
The battery light is an indication of no charging voltage, since the belt is not spinning the alternator. The heavy steering is due to the steering pump not turning, again, because of the belt missing.

Pop your hood and look in the front of the engine (the passenger side) and verify the belt is broken/missing.

If this is the case, list price on the four cylinder drive belt is $26.15

I do not have list prices on the V6 belts, but they should be around $20 and $30 for the two.

Labor to install is between $50 and $90 depending on your repair shops hourly rate for either engine.

It would NOT be advisable to drive it to the repair shop for a few reasons. Primarily safety related.

Your reaction time will be hindered due to the heavy steering.

Your car will be powered ONLY by the battery and you could potentially become stranded if the battery does not have enough power to go as far you need the car to go. (resulting in needing a battery as well)

Your waterpump will not be spinning, creating possible overheat condition if it is more than a very short distance, possibly leading to engine damage.

If you verify the belts are in fact broken/missing, please make arrangements to have the car towed for repair or repaired on site for your safety and the car's safety :)

Battery light came on and the engine still runs but hardly no power steering

Sounds like the belt came off.(I believe this is a serpentine belt, not sure.) If the belt came off,one of the accesories on that belt probably seized up,or maybe the idler pulley,if it has one. This would explain the battery light(regulator sees that the key is on but the alternator isn't charging) and the lack of power steering(less noticeable if the vehicle is moving).

How to fix 2002 toyota camry hard steering

Check the power steering fluid levels. Also the pump may need replacing if it isn't delivering enough hydraulic pressure to the steering box. Be sure to lube all the steering components on the chassis if possible.
