Question about 2006 Jeep Liberty

Battery light is on and its hard to steer the car

I have a 2002 Toyota Camry and my battery light just came on and its very hard to steer the car. As soon as the light came on, the steering instantly became hard. The car runs fine otherwise.
Any ideas of what this might be? And will it be expensive or somewhat cheap to fix?

Thank You

I never knew that. That large belt has nothing to do with the engine?
Ive checked and it looks like there is only one belt. The belt is off one of the wheels, but doesn't appear broke. Which makes sense now, because the AC does not come on anymore. I was able to drive home safely. Other than the fact that its difficult to steer, is this something that I would have to leave the car in my drive way and have it towed, or is it safe enough to drive to the repair shop in the morning?

    Thank You

I never knew that. I always thought that belt had something to do with the engine.

I checked the belt and there is only 1 belt. Its appears to be not broken, but it is off one of the pulleys. Which makes sense now, because the AC does not come on anymore. Other than the fact that the steering is difficult, is it safe enough to drive the car to the repair shop in the morning, or will I do more damage to it and therefore need to have it towed in the morning?

If this is a 3.0 liter engine there are 3 drive belts one is for the air condition, one is for the alternator, and the last one is for the power steering. So if the alternator belt has broken first it would get caught up in the power steering belt and make that belt jump off the pump pulley. If this is a 2.4 liter engine then there is only 1 belt that runs everything from the a/c, to the alternator and power steering. So i would check to see if any of the belts are missing or broke,if so make sure there is no locked up pulleys that could have broke the belt or cause it to jump off .Belts are not very expensive to replace .P.s if this is the three liter engine it will not overheat if these belts came off due to the water pump being run by the camshaft belt and cooled by the electric fan I hope this answerd your question :)

I would have it towed for 2 reasons,First if the battery light is on the car will run only off your battery this will drain it fast and leave you stranded .Second without power steering it would be very hard to avoid something should you have to turn sharply .It sounds like you just need a idle pulley replaced and the belt put back on if it was not damaged Good luck to you in the future
    best regards mike

Battery light came on and the engine still runs but hardly no power steering

Sounds like the belt came off.(I believe this is a serpentine belt, not sure.) If the belt came off,one of the accesories on that belt probably seized up,or maybe the idler pulley,if it has one. This would explain the battery light(regulator sees that the key is on but the alternator isn't charging) and the lack of power steering(less noticeable if the vehicle is moving).

How to fix 2002 toyota camry hard steering

Check the power steering fluid levels. Also the pump may need replacing if it isn't delivering enough hydraulic pressure to the steering box. Be sure to lube all the steering components on the chassis if possible.

2002 Camry shut down while idle

I have 2002 Toyota Camry also and mine did the same thing. I ended up having to put a battery in the vehicle 2 weeks later so you may want to get that tested. Mechanic told me it was the alternator but I tested the battery at Auto Zone and the battery was bad. I did this a year ago and has not happened again.
