Temp.gauge really has nothing to do with the perfomance of the engine. If the car has been unused for a few hours, the engine oil etc settles down. It is good idea to let it run after a cold start so the oil circulates in the engine. Keep in mind it's a 1996 model and needs more care. Keep servicing regularly.

2002 galant will start up fine cold and run for 20 min, after hot soak will not start, back fires through intake

Yes your 4 cyl engine uses direct spark with a coil over each spark plug.
And the computer controls the firing of the plugs and injector pulse.
The problem could be the crank or cam sensor, or the wiring harness, but in most cases the check engine light should be on and a code set.
You might want to check the computer for codes, then try the cam sensor.

Hi there it cranks normal speed but the engine does not start. Does not start when cold mostly. Mechanic said a 4 hour job to do the other 3 so will have to go back in when they have more time to look at...

Well, it should not take four hours to replace the rear plugs, but the engine needs to be cold. You have to reach up from underneath the car along the firewall to get to them, if the engine is hot you will burn your arms on the exhaust and such. I did it on my 1995 Voyager and it only took me about an hour.
Could be several things, might be worth the price to have a good shop diagnose it using an engine analyzer, you might have to leave it overnight, however, so that they can reproduce it.

the golf gti was plauged with a fault which vw will not own upto. it is a know fact that the induction manifold can sometimes fracture and allow unwanted air in when hot. if well serviced you will find this to be the problem. if not then i would strongly recomend that you service it.
