Question about Hyundai Santa Fe

1 Answer

I just got the water pump and timing belt replaced on a 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe v6 because antifreeze was leaking from that area and the SUV was overheating- i didnt let it get too high and it was leaking long before the engine was getting hot. The mechanic took it for a test drive to make sure it wasnt overheating and it wasnt. I picked it up and drove it around doing errands and then noticed it was leaking in the same place as before, but the engine was not overheating what so ever. Could this be a head gasket or a cracked head? The engine is running great- no loss of power and sounds normal. I paid 485 for this and i hope it wasnt for nothing. Also i looked online and see that there is this stuff called head gasket repair- is that a thing to try or is it too risky. Please help!!!!!!!!!!!

Could be intake gasket, head gasket or leaking bolt that didn't get sealed. You can use sealer but sometimes it does more damage then good. I don't use it on any vehicles that come in because of sometimes plugging more then it should, like the radiator and then causing over heat issues. But you can try it if you wish.

Is the 2002 hyaundai santefe a zero tolerance motor

The 2002 Santa Fe 4 cyl and 6 cyl engines are deemed "Interference" engines. If the timing belt should break or slip a few teeth, the pistons will strike the valves and most likely destroy the engine. Thus it is very important to change the timing belt every 80,000 - 100,000 miles (along with a replacement water pump). I recommend buying a belt/pump kit and having a local independent shop do the install (much cheaper than a dealer's $600 charge!).

Belt & pump kits are available via Amazon:

Starting in 207 Hyundai started shifting all of their engines to metal timing "chains"... more or less eliminating the possibility of such a problem. However, water pumps still go out... but not nearly as often or catastrophic a problem!

How can I changed the timing belt

Depends on which ENGINE you have (three different engines in the 2001 Santa Fe)... I4 (four cylinder), 2.7L (V6) and the 3.5 (V6). Each has different (exact) procedures for replacing the timing belt.

03' santa fe 2.7 liter V6 water pump seized, causing the timing belt to strip on the crankshaft timing sprocket. The belt did not break, but striped the teeth off the belt.Yes, the crankshaft did turn...

replace the belt with a new one, when you do the water pump, reset the timing and give it a start,if it works, then you can SMILE,if not, you can use the belt/water pump on the new engine.gotta be the cheapest way forward.......

Does the 2002 hyundai santa fe have an interference engine? It has a 2.4L 4-cylinder.

Hi:
All of the engines in Hyundai santa fe are interference engines, so you should regularly change your timing belt. The timing belt also drives the water pump, so it is always a good idea to change that too, if you have the engine apart for the timing belt. Here is a link to check out!

Would like to know if water pump needs to be changed when doing timing belt on 2004 hyundai santa fe 2.0 liter and how long of a job is it

Hi....
On your 2004 Santa Fe.
The water pump is not driven by the Timing belt.
Is not stricttly nessesary to replace togheter. they are individual.
But I recomend replace the timing belt when you replace the water pump. Because for get axces to the water pump,
you need to remove all the Timing covers.
Is just a few more minutes to remove the Timing belt.
Inspect the Engine seals, cam and crank Replace if need.
My PC show me a 2.4L 4cyl. for 2004 santa fe.

Ok.. The labor for that job Removing the Timing belt and water Pump ...IS:
2.8 hours. just the water pump 2.4 hours.

OK.. I hope this help on your question...
Thank you for use fixya..
