The distributor fire order is what you see on the intake. You just have to start on the #1. The cap may say one, but:

If you are not sure where your #1 cylinder starts on your distributor, here is what you do.

  1. Remove the distributor cap.
  2. Remove the #1 spark plug. (I think it is the front left, but the way you will know for sure is look for the head that is furthest forward and the first plug in that head is one.)
  3. There is a tool you can screw into the plug that will tell you when you reach top dead center, but without that toll use a thin screw driver. Hook up a compression gage and watch the reading as you turn the engine over by hand. (you can put a socket on the crank or remove the flywheel cover and use a pry bar turning the flywheel. Do not use the key unless it is only to get it near the right setting.)
  4. When you see compression building in the gage, (By the way if you do not have a gage, you can use your finger and wait to feel the presure), use the screw driver to touch the top of the piston. then slowly keep turning the flywheel until you start seeing the screw driver begin to drop. The turn the flywheel backwards just a touch until the screw driver is at its max high point.
  5. Not the location of the rotor in the dist. cap. It will be pointing to the #1 tower on the cap. Start there. The cap will have an arrow built into it and that will tell you which way to go according to the firing order.
  6. Use a piece of tape and mark the tower and put the cap back on. If you have a white marker it may make it easier to go around from that point and mark each tower 1-8 in the direction of the arrow according to the intake order.
  7. Follow the firing order to install the wires.
As long as you have not removed the distributor, this should set you up for a final timing after you get it running.

Hope this helps.

I need to know where the plug wires go.from spark plug to distibuter cap on a 1986 4.1 coupe deville(cad.)

FIRING ORDERS NOTE: To avoid confusion, remove and tag the spark plug wires one at a time, for replacement. If a distributor is not keyed for installation with only one orientation, it could have been removed previously and rewired. The resultant wiring would hold the correct firing order, but could change the relative placement of the plug towers in relation to the engine. For this reason it is imperative that you label all wires before disconnecting any of them. Also, before removal, compare the current wiring with the accompanying illustrations. If the current wiring does not match, make notes in your book to reflect how your engine is wired. Have a 1985 ford f150 302 efi v8 need to know the firing order?

1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 The rotor turns counter-clockwise. Make sure to keep #7 and #8 spark plug wires separated. The 5.0L had a problem with 7 and 8 cross-firing because they fire so close to each other. Ford changed the firing order on that engine, in later years , because of that reason. Hope this helps ya... Cobra :-)

look at your distributor cap while standing on the driver's side of the vehicle.
Start at number 1, which is labelled on the cap, and go
clockwise
