This engine has problems with the plug wire boots shorting to the cylinder heads, also the MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR CAN CAUSE THIS PROBLEM AND SET NO CODES.

My check engine light has came on 3 time 2 of those time a it was hook to a tester code was 0172 the 3rd time it went off by itself thought it was due better gas I need help

Code 172 means the O2 sensor is telling the computer the fuel mixture is too rich.
The computer adjusts fuel mixture thru the injectors based on data from the O2 sensor among other things.
The problem could be the O2 sensor or something else like a faulty injector or air restriction.

What causes a rough idle when in gear at a stop

There are a few things that can cause this.
1 running your gas tank too low -junk in the gas clogs the gas filter -easy cheap fix
2 the idle could be off too much air or gas on the mixture going into the carb.
3 Timming. this should be done twice a year or so -need timing light -any garage can check it.
4 Need new spark plugs and or wires.
Start with these then see what happens.

Car gave several coughs at 60 plus yesterday then seemed to clear today had spate of 10 / 12 coughs and splutters during which the engine light came on and the battery light ... changed down gear to 2 or 3...

Depending on the mileage of the vehicle sounds like the timing belt has stretched. If the coughing is when you give it gas but not when it is not under load timing belt would be my guess. Good luck and drive safe.

I have a '1998 Toyota 4runner 5spd 3.4Ltr V6 4WD... Recently I've had two seperate issues arrise and I'm not sure if they are related or unrelated to each other! Upon excelleration and only if I am giving...

you can have 1) ignition system problem 2) fuel system problem
However you must RUN the scanner/computer for better diagnostic.
the electronic now is very complicated. see the diagram attached.

Truck backfires and stalls when excellerated half way.

Sounds like the timing open the distributor and in there is a relector,is there alot of corrosion? This reluctor has a tendency to shift out of position causing the vehicle timing to retar,Another area to inspect is the MAP (manifold air pressure) .This sensor monitor engine load according to vacuum when this goes out you cant accelerate the vehicle and it sputters as the vehicle tries to accelerate, you need to check that the vacuum hose has not come off,or just failed

I have put 3 fuel pumps in 2 years why do they keep going out

You are pulling trash through the line from your old tank.

Back in the late 80's and early 90's, gasoline wasnt as watched today, and you more than likely have debris from regular use and accumulation from using gas cans and what not.

here are your options

1. Replace the fuel tank along with the pump this time. (it will cost another 100bucks but will last atleat 45k-55k miles no problem) = RECOMMENDED SOLUTION

2.Drop the tank and clean it out. (this is very dirty and time consuming work, be prepared to buy a new tank if you take it off in case its more difficult than your willing to do)

3. Stop running your vehicle out of gas. Put tape or something over your gauge or something to where half a tank is your refill point. The most damage to a fuel system occurs when your fuel level is at 30% or below capacity. I recommend 50% for vehicles with major "fuel sputtering"

Remember that all the components of your vehicle work together. Getting the wrong fuel mixture can permanently damage your vehicle by putting added strain on the heads and block, ultimately cause fractures and inconsistancies within the engine itself

Took a road trip to houston and since i've been back the car is sputtering and running sluggish. the check engine light just came on this morning on my way into work. any thoughts? oil was just changed...

Try running some fuel injector or fuel system cleaner through the engine and be certain your gas cap is on tight. While you might have encountered some bad gas on your trip it is likely coincidental , due to running at highway speeds for an extended time. Your check engine light is linked to the fuel air mixture ECU which regulates fuel mixture. If an O2 sensor on the engine or exhaust area is clogged or failing due to leaky catalytic converter, the ECU will attempt to adjust your fuel mixture which will affect your idle.
Have a tech run a readout on the vehicle after cleaning the fuel system. The readout will indicate what caused the check engine light to come on.

Gas engine starts then stalls after a few minutes of running and then will not start again. Carb smells of gas. Seems flooded. Replaced coil without improvement. Been in the shop 3 times, each time tuned...

The shop should have adjusted your air/fuel mixture on the carb. considering the year of the vehicle, you may need to replace the carb with a factory re-manufactured unit. Even if you replace the carb with a re-man, it will still need to be adjusted to optimum performance for your particular vehicle.

My little pick up is chocking when i step on the gas i already check  the time my gas  , pump is good, the gas filter is good so any ideas

check your spark plugs and s.a.s. and the fuel mixture screw, good spark plugs cost more than $3 so make sure you dont have cheap **** inside trying to keep a 20 year old vehicle purring.
