Question about 1993 Honda Prelude

1 Answer

Hi - I have a 1997 Honda Prelude 2.2 with an annoying oil leak. I cleaned up today to find the source, which appears to be on top of the block, rear left of engine, adjacent to the timing belt cover. I wonder if this may be a common problem that anyone could advise upon?! Despite the product details (not enough choices) its a 1997 Prelude 2.2 VTi

Is it just above the oil filter which is left rear of engine.
The oil pressure switch is there and famous for leaking.

Blue smoke in my 96 honda prelude

Blue smoke is usually an indication of oil burning. If you see blue smoke and hear a loud sound it could be a few things. The biggest being you have a hole in your block. You could also have a leak in your exhaust and be burning oil. A quick trip to a local autoparts store should answer this question. Most employees are willing to lend an ear and have experience with cars.
I recomend you dont take the car on anything other than short trips untill your problem is found and solved.

Radiator leak

just look at it , parked with a hot engine.
its under 12-14psi pressure, so will leak , with ANY cracks
your job is to look, and see the leak and the crack.
my wild guess, is its a bad RAD.

your short REAR, says zero. to me.
it has huge area front and back , top to bottom ,left to right.

btw, a hose can squirt AF fluid, so not cleaning it first
then getting it hot, then seeing the true source of the leak
is all just conjecture.

clean it (water
start car, see the leak now?
bingo, and bingo the source.
see any squirts from other objects.
hoes ,water pump, manifolds.?

What number oil do i use for 1997 honda prelude?

  • Hi, You want to use a 5W30 weight oil for your car. I would recommend a High Mileage 5W30 motor oil as well. High Mileage has some detergents and additives that help swell the seals of engines with over 75,000 - 100,000 miles on it to prevent minor leaks.

  • If you have any comment please feel free to leave them here.
  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

My 95 Honda prelude is leaking oil bad, it's leaking from the part directly behind the oil pan. What is that part called?

It's usually the rear main oil seal that's located immediately behind the oil pan on an engine. They do eventually leak and need replacing. Have it checked out.

Looks like the oil is leaking out right above the

oil filter screws onto an adapter housing which also has the pressure sending unit on it (above oil filter). This adapter housing bolts to the block with 3 bolts. if oil appears to be leaking from where the adapter housing meets the block (especially at the rear side of engine near bottom), then you need to replace the siamese o-rings between the adapter housing and the block ($12 part at dealer). remove lowest 12mm bolt and loosen top 2 12 mm bolts(top 2 bolts won't come out unless you drop the engine down, but loosening 1 inch is all you need), replace o-rings and retighten bolts. be careful not to get dirt/grit between block and adapter. just finished doing this to son's 95 2.7 v6 which was leaving an 8" puddle of oil after idling for only 1 minute-worked perfect

Oil leak

hi common fault on these is the oil switch oil runs down the block around the oil filter and down the sump as you are driving along the air draft blows it all over the place so clean it up run the engine and from underneath the car see where it is coming from the only other things on the sump that would leak are the sump plug washer and the crankshaft main oil seal at the rear of the engine it will be the switch best of luck paul
