In response to the solution posted by "CAPSMAN" DO NOT USE GASOLINE FOR ANY CLEANING PURPOSES! What do you want to do? Burn the Car, Yourself and possibly your Home and/or Garage to the ground? The preferred method is to obtain some commercially available Engine Degreaser **** as "GUNK" or equivalent. Spray it on per the manufacturers directions, after it has been on the engine for the specified time hose it of with a garden hose. It works best when applied to a Warm NOT HOT engine. The warmth will help evaporate the water used for rinsing from electrical components. Do not get water into the Air Intake system, Alternator or Starter. Most all vehicles from the 80's up will restart immediately after rinsing. Some may require an hour or so drying time.

Spray on oven cleaner is great for cutting through the oil. Just be careful not to remove paint with it. Fantastic type cleaner works for thinner oil accumulations. Or brush with gasoline. Use a toothbrush or barbecue brush. Then, I've always just hosed off my engine with a forceful jet of water. It hasn't caused a problem, even when I've started the engine wet. But to be careful, last time I dried the ignition coils and spark plug wires before starting the engine.

Idles high, running temperature is 225 degrees and have to push on accelerator to start

hi,

are you familiar with the northstar engine?
first generation northstars are notorious for this kind of thing..
the engine is prone for metal fatigue/ warping of the heads, and stripped out head bolts, do you have documentation and service history for it?
these engines need a good mechanic to inspect and replace head bolts which strip out and need fixing. I will post a link at the bottom
once the engine is repaired correctly it should last a good long time
have it fixed correctly. I think someone has turned up the idle knob in an attempt to get the coolant flowing quicker to keep it cool.
its worth repairing if you have the money..

Whta size thermostat for a 97 northstar engine?

Your engine is a 4.6 liter 281 CID V8.

There are thermostat rated for 180f or 195f for your engine,

I will select a 195f thermostat with a pressure relief poppet/valve to protect the coolant hoses.

Northstar Engine

First NORTHSTAR ( 1992 ) engines were quite troublesome, from faulty starters ( in the middle of the engine ) to loss of oil pressure.
