Have you tried it in all gears?
Could be a number of things.

1:First I would suggest to check the hydrolics and clutch slave are working.
2:check propshaft turning when in gear.

From these simple checks you can determine where the problem is and repair as nessessary.

Please come back to me if you require further assistance.

You have a mechanical problem in your drivetrain (clutch disc, pressure plate likely), or you may have a problem with your transmission or your driveshaft or differential.

My car wont shift out of 2nd gear.the shifting handle is sloppy and the clutch is working fine

if the clutch really is working, (lever at bell moves 3/4")
by fine, my guess, is you can take off from dead stop in2nd, right>?
then its a bad shifter. tip.
or linkage (end tranny extension housing)
or transmission actual core.(shift rails, or forks) or worse.
you do know ,that you can disconnect the linkage and test tranny.
by hand,
key off
leakage off
shift to neutral (read the FSM or alldata.com) for how. under M/T sections.
then key on start engine, clutch depressed, the lift pedel
car moves its stuck in 2nd, of not bad linkage.
can do all gears that way, use 2 people and do not stand infront of car doing test.
or put the front wheels up on stands. but do not get near them.
while engine is running.
btw some shifters have plastic parts that go bad in the shifter tip.

or ,
jack up car in front, can you now shift car in to neutral or any gear?
linkage tests.
remove shifter housing and below see the shifter, H pattern
sifter box mechanism.
see that. you can shift that by hand with any small wrench or
large screwdriver, if the works the parts on the end of the shifter
handle main shaft tip are bad.

2003 ford transit turbo manual gearbox, stuck in 2nd gear, cant start

does the clutch push normally or is the linkage broken not disengaging clutch, and then does shifter move around or locked and wont move, loose linkage in shifter or gears are jammed inside transmission and something went, if shifter wont move at all then trans is jammed inside and needs repair.

97 mazda 626 wont shift from park. release button on side of shifter wont push in. removed knob, plastic rod in center wont move

The 1st thing you need to do is check the brake lights, if they are not wiorking the park lock solenoid doesn't get power and the park lock remains engaged.

My problem is that the manual transmission is stuck in 4th gear. I was backing up when I went to put it into 1st the shifter was stuck. The clutch works to disengage the gears but the shifter won't...

That cylinder is known as the clutch slave cylinder. It should push against the clutch fork every time the clutch pedal is depressed to allow gear changes. If it doesn't, suspect a faulty slave cylinder, or clutch master cylinder.

Not sure if shifter is installed properly

Ok, I guess its going to be a not too obvious solution then. All we have to do is find it...
1.What type of gear shifter is in your truck. Column or tower
2. Is the tail shaft turning when you try to move the vehicle
3. Does the vehicle try to move at all
4. Is there any noise from the gearbox or clutch area
5. Are you certain the clutch kit was the right one
6. Did you try the clutch plate on the gearbox input shaft spline
7. Is the release bearing clear of the pressure plate fingers.
8. Does the release bearing carrier slide freely on the retainer on the front of the bearbox, and did you apply lubricant here.

My neighbor has a 1984 toyota w cylinder with a manual tranny and it wont come out of reverse how do i fix this problem

try moving the shifter with the engin not running. if the shifter is still stuck try bleeding the clutch. If the doesn't help and the clutch system is in good working condition then the transmission is hung up between two gears. Remove the shifter cover and with a flat screw driver move the detemts to the nuetral position

Hopefully it's just the clutch, you may have snapped a shaft too. If the engine was just idling, I can't imagine it did too much damage, even with those miles.

1988 suzuki samurai WONT MOVE

First thing just try to push or pull the 4x4 lever if you get it to move and it feels like it went into some gear try to drive the truck. If this works look on the shifter for the 4x4 and put it in 2 wheel drive (H2 is two wheel drive,H4 is 4x4 high, and L4 is 4x4 low range).Make sure you have the clutch depresed when you try to move the 4x4 lever. If you try this stuff with no fix try and look for clutch adjustment on the transmision you may need to adjust it or your clutch is bad.
