Question about Volvo S40

1 Answer

Engine compartment on my 2005 s40 2.4i has a whistling and whining noise. It winds down slowly when you turn the engine off. It does not vary in pitch with acceleration or rpms. It is not a belt, alternator, or fan. My local guy is getting fuel mixture codes and cannot get rid of the the check engine light to complete the emmissions for inspection. He said he replaced a piece of hose and fixed the vacuum leak, but I noticed it immediately upon driving the car again. I saw on some forums comments about intake issues, and or vaccum leaks around the oil filter???

Ac makes whining noise on a 2004 Pontiac grand prix

Is the whining noise coming from the engine compartment where the compressor is located or is the noise coming from inside the car? If the noise if coming from inside the car it could be your blower. When a blower wears down the bushing is the first thing to wear down and it begins to have play. That makes the blower/fan vibrate making a loud whining noise. Replacing the blower could solve that whining noise.
If the noise if coming from the AC compressor, it also could be a bad bearing within the compressor.

Whistling sound coming from right rear

Checking Window Seals - The window seals (weather stripping) in your car are used to seal the water and wind for entering the passenger compartment. When these seals fail from damage or are eroded by the weather they can allow wind noise to enter the passenger compartment. This failure can cause a whistling noise as the car is driven. Some noises are only present when the vehicle is driven at certain speeds such as 55 MPH. These whistling noises can be difficult to find since you are driving at the time. Have a passenger help with the diagnosis by running their hand along the area the noise is being generated from. Once the noise source has been located replace or repair the failed seal and recheck.

Background grind/whine when Passat moving

It may be the new CV joints. They take a while to break in and may sound a little rough at first. I was surprised, when I replaced mine, how stiff the new joints are. I asked two different people at different auto parts stores if that was normal to be that stiff and they said yes. See if it diminishes or disappears after a couple thousand miles. Cold weather may also exaggerate this.

High pitch whistling noise in engine compartment of 2005 envoy

There may be a small hole or cut in a vacum line or possibly just loose. Also make sure the air filter box and the big hose to it are secure and clamps etc are tight. Pulleys and belts can make a high pitch sound also.

Wind whistle noise

To determine what's making the whistle, try putting some tape over anything that might be causing it. I'd tape over any trim or moldings to try and find out where its coming from. You might try a wide roll of tape over the window edges, and trim points, if the whistle stops, take off a section at a time and recheck until it appears again, and you know what's causing it. Try to keep the tape flat, or you might create some new whistles! Let me know how you do. countrycurt0
