Not all modern engines need you to set the valve clearances. Most engines use oil filled 'tappets' that self adjust the clearance as the oil temperature changes. Depending on which engine it is yours has a lot of the time you can only check the valve clearance but not adjust it.
its always best to get a book with the specs because almost every engine has lash adjustment.
allthough not alway just adjustable.
what i meen is that some engines, fords did it , u have to change the pushrod.
on overhead cam engines u had to change lifters
theres a lot of ways to do it but u should probly get the specs.
Clearance is NOT the issue. The Elantra engine I4 (2.0 lit) is an interference valve-.to-pinston clearance. If the valve timing to piston clearance is exceeded (wether advanced or retarded), the valves will 'kiss' the top of the pistons and get bent. Also verify 'INTAKE' & 'EXHAUST' cams have been installed proprely. Valve timing (timing marks at camshaft sprockets in reference to crank shaft sprocket) is essential. Also,.ensure proper timing belt tension.
The tappet clearence should be in the owners handbook but it's a bit early a tappet noise from the engine (2006) ! Check oil level and change if it's overdue a service is definately worth a look ! Good luck
2ltr youll have damaged valves, depending on engines milage, check cost of replacing motor or doing the head job, sometimes u can get a good used motor cheaper than a head job! youll have to decide.regards
