2003 v6 dakota serpentine belt shreds

Serpentine belt shreds often. The fan wiggles very slightly when running. It's fine when engine is shut down. could it be that the crankshaft pulley needs to be replaced?

Might also check the various pulley for alignment they all should be in the same plane so that the belt runs straight. I had one on the power steering pump which had crept forward on the shaft and was running the belt off the other pullies and shredding it.

Wth the engine off, try wiggling all the pulleys one by one. Any that have excess play need to be replaced or the component they are attached to needs replacement. After checking, remove the belt and check again for smooth turning. any roughness in a bearing is also unacceptable. Crank pulley is attached to crankshaft so it will not turn, but make sure the bolts that hold any extension pulley on the balancer are tight.
Crank pulley is generally the last thing that will give you a problem but should be checked along with all others.

I'd be more inclined to check that idler pulleys and alternator bearings are okay before looking at crank pulley. Take off the belt and give them a good wiggle and spin.

Check if it's the fan, take off the belt and run it long enough to see if the noise disappears.

SERPENTINE BELT

I had a similar problem that turned out to be some bad rubber bushings on the alternator mounting bolt. The alternator would shift from side to side causing misalignment with the serpentine belt. To check this, you will need to remove the serpentine belt and take a close look at those bushings. If they are original equipment, I would change them out. In my case, everything lined up fine, but with the engine running, the alternator would shift position and shred the serpentine belt. Good luck.

I have a 1999 Mercury Sable. The only problem I have had with the car is the serpentine belt. It started 3 months ago . . . the engine was overheating and the belt was shredding. I bought a belt...

is the a/c working ok??? shredding the belt may be cause by the a/c compressor problems. the "chunk" maybe not, but shredding tells me something does not spin when it should. I dont know why the mehanic put a new pump on that had a problem with the pulley, it should be smooth. anyhting that the belt runs should be smooth and east to turn, make sure that all of the grooves are clean, no remnants of the old belt.

Looking for some assistance on replacing my serpentine belt on a 2003 dodge dakota (v6/3.7L). I'm not sure where the tension pulley is (left front facing engine?) and want to make sure I ''tighten'' the...

The tensioner pully is the one that's mounted to an arm, with a square hole to put the 3/8" drive of your ratchet into. Consult the diagram by the hood latch to identify the other pullies, i.e. power steering, a/c, alternator, that should narrow it down for you. It's basically the only pulley not directly attached to a component.

With the belt off and the motor NOT running, grab the big fan on the front of the motor and see if it wobbles.

Serpentine belt on 1992 dakota

You don't mention which engine you have in your '92 Dakota, but it's likely the 3.3L and if so, here's the diagram. Even if your engine is not the 3.3L the principals for replacing the belt are the same.

Get a serpentine belt tension release tool (local parts store) and use it to take the tension wheel away from the belt, which will make it loose enough to remove by simply pulling it off one of the pulleys (the alternator will be easiest) and then wiggle it out of the engine bay. The tool should come with a selection of heads for the different variations of tensioner arms/bolts. Once the belt is removed, replacing it is the reverse process.

Hope this helps, and please rate my answer.

Don't just try looking for the 3.7. The 4.7 has the same routing also. I can't get a diagram from my chrysler site but most quick lanes have the books on that and they should be able to talk you thru it.
