As you know that the wrench means maintenance needed. Usually this icon is reset after maintenance is done via Star diagnose.

My Smart Fortwo is doing the same thing, started several days after I had the oil changed. But the car shop isn't used to working on Smart cars, so they don't have this Star diagnose thing mentioned above.... What do I do now? Is this something I can do myself, or do I need to take it somewhere else? Does it cause problems if the wrench light flashes on every day for a while? The numbers for the odometer are replaced by a negative number until the wrench light goes away....

How do I reset the "service now' message on my 2008 Passat?

With the key sitting in the ignition but NOT on (not even accessories...the key is in in there but literally just about to fall out) push and hold the wrench button. Count 5 seconds, start the car while still pushing the wrench button and then push the min button on your clock. You must be holding the wrench button and the min button at the same time to reset the service message.
To test if you've reset properly, turn the car off and start it again. If you've reset properly the 'SERVICE NOW' will not appear and is automatically reset for 5k miles.

Double wrench sign on with a daily countdown

What you've described is the service indicator for your vehicle. It's telling you that if you want to maintain the reliability and manufacturer warranty on your car then you you should arrange to have your vehicle serviced.

There are ways to reset this without having the car serviced, but the Smart ForTwo is very intolerant of skimped servicing and you'll find that ignoring it = huge repair bills. Servicing the Smart is cheap and does not have to be done by a Smart dealer, but to maintain the warranty any non-franchised outlet must provide documentation to confirm that their servicing has been exactly according to the manufacturer's schedule. The work can easily be done by any competent DIY mechanic, but the warranty is invalidated unless the DIYer is a professionally qualified car mechanic.

I need to reset my service now light for my vw passat 2007

With the ignition off hold the wrench button down.
While still holding the wrench button turn on the ignition all the way, but do not start the car.

Release the wrench button and press and hold the minutes (min) for a few seconds.

You can also use a VAGCOM cable
