Question about 2004 Porsche Boxster

3 Answers

My Porsche dealer took the compression on my Boxster 2004 (43,000 kilometers) and found that on one piston, there is only 60 of compression compare to the 5 others which have app., 160??? He said that he has to open the motor to check if it is a valve which don't close ok? What do you think??? He checked that because sometimes, the light "check engine" lights up. Thanks for your comments. Robert

Two other ways of checking the insides are :1. Put a borescope into the cylinder (tiny camera with a flexible shaft goes in through plug hole) and actually take a look. or: 2. Do a cylinder leakdown test (air pressure is flowed into the cylinder...if air comes out through the engine breather, rings are bad, if air comes out intake, intake valve is bad, if air comes out exhaust, exhaust is bad. But, in any case, to make the repair, the cylinder head needs to be removed, so, unless you don't intend to make the repair at all, why not just remove it and start the job?
It's actually nice to see a shop that doesn't blame everything on the computer and hasn't forgotten that there is an engine under all the electronics!

He must check the valve lash for the valves on that particular cylinder, if one valve is out of adjustment or too tight compression problems will be present, it is unlikely the valves have tightened themselves up but either way too tight or too loose the valve lash clearances must be checked if they check out OK he must then do a wet test which is when he squirts oil into the cylinder through the spark plug hole and checks the compression if the compression reading increases the rings are bad if the reading stays the same the valve or valves are leaking pressure.

If you are not getting as much compression on one cylinder as your are getting on the others it would be wise to let him check it out it could be a valve not operating properly or it could be bad rings. If he checks and a valve is not opening properly and is a valve spring or rocker arm not to bad of a problem, but if it is a camshaft or piston rings then it is a little bit more expensive.

My 1999 porsche boxter horn blows when you hit the brakes?

A common problem. The rubber bushings within the (steering wheel) airbag frame go soft and compress over time. Replacement of the frame (or just bushings, if your adventurous) will solve the problem. My dealer wants $250 for the repair. In the meantime, wedge something between the steering wheel cover and the wheel itself (folded matchbook or equal) to help.

2002 Porsche Boxster - had squealing coming from

Mine did that off and on for a month with no other problems then it started making a loud suction noise and the check engine light came on. I took it to the dealer and they said the "oil separator" needed to be replaced.
After the repair I never heard the squealing again.

Blue smoke sometimes when I start my 2004 Boxster

Te blue smoke is oil getting into the piston/fire chamber..

If it is only at start-up - it is more than likely the valve seals.. Allot of the time they use plastic ones so therefor it is somewhat common for cars to do this..
If it is not to bad and stops soon after start-up,, its not really a big deal..

IF it is allot - and smokes all the time - it could be that the valve seals need to be replaced OR could be the piston rimgs are shot..

Please dont forget to rate well ;o)
