Question about 1996 Mitsubishi Galant

'96 Mitsubishi Chariot won't turn switch on when key is turned

We have a 1996 Mitsubishi Chariot (manual), and when I try to switch it on I have to sit and turn the key over and over and over again. It can take between 5 and 50 (if not more) turns to actually turn over. There is just a clicking sound. I can usually predict when the next turn will work as there is an odd 'click' in the general area of the passenger door on the left front. Then if I hold the key for a few seconds longer after cranking it then it starts. If I let go too soon after it takes then it just cuts out and I have to sit for another hour trying to get it switched on again. Please help -my hubby has checked all the fuses and the wires and all connections in side the steering column (in case something was worn or pulled apart) and still no luck.

Thank you so much for your quick response - as soon as my hubby is home this afternoon I will show him this post and ask him to do as you suggest :o). If it is that then how much would that cost to replace do you think? And a starter?

There is a kick panel on the side of the door and you may have a starter relay going bad, remove the screws on the side of the kick panel and remove next when turning key on to start fell the relays that are in that compartment when you feel one that clicks that is the start relay switch, remove it and try replacing it. If that does not fix the problem you will need to check the ground wires and the starter to see if it loose on the engine. If you need more help please post here and hope this helps.

The relay will cost about $20.00 and the starter can cost cost from $69.00 to $109.00 it does have a starter solenoid so that could be your problem there is a button on the inside of the solenoid and it's about 16 dollars, I could not find your model but chose one close to it and here is there web page. It does not show a relay so it is most likely the solenoid. Let me know if you need more help.

Car won't start,i changed everything.it seems like something is wrong with ignition.

Exact same problem on my 96 legnum.
I had a mate look at it as he has been a mechanic for 20+ years. He said to check the starter relay. It's inside the car somewhere.
When you find it. Take it out and put a wire between where the two big terminals were. If it starts the car. That is your problem.

AND DON'T FORGET TO PUT THE CAR IN PARK OR NEUTRAL

Turn key on, but doesnt even click. battery and starter are fine

This may be due to a bad neutral safety switch, is this car automatic or manual transmission?

If automatic try to start in neutral and if manual try to locate switch on clutch pedal and use a jumper wire to jump connector for switch, NOTE; If switch is jumped car will start in gear with pedal not pushed down and car will take off so this is just as a test not a repair!!!!!, good day

96 celica won't turn over

If the engine won't crank, it could be the starter, battery, connections, neutral safety switch, or key switch.

Key will not turn in cylinder to start engine of 96 Eclipse.

relax the stering wheel by turning it in the direction to free it up so that there is not pressure locking up the ignition switch and may damn sure its it park. you should have some free play side to side. if this isnt the problem your ignition switch is probably bad...try the car in nuetral position...there is a neutral switch which will sometimes let the car start. and if it is a stick you will have to push in the clutch, saftey feature.and if all ekse fails try sqiirt it ignitioin swich with a little wd-40 stick the kee in gentle and work it in there slowly, hopes this help
oh and canyou rate this for me ..thank you!

I have a 96 audi a6 and the key is now stuck in the ignition. Car starts and runs but the key will not come out. Just happened out of the blue...

I would try WD-40, spraying down beside the key with a spray nozzle on the end before I took it to a repair shop or pulled the steering wheel.
