Start by removing top front camshaft cover ,revealing camshaft sprockets. now jack veihcul up and place on stands. remove left hand front wheel (cam belt side) . remove power sterring belt and alternater belt.looking at crankshaft pully and using an 18mm socket and bar rotate pully until all three marks line up. crank on 1st timing mark and and cam marks facing each other when all three line up you can then remove crankshaft pully , you will need an impact wrench that can torque up to 300lbs .when pully has been removed you can then remove the lower belt cover you will then see the belt tensioner and unbolt and remove , now place a jack with protection under sump and remove bolts on engine mount, when you have separted the 2 halves of the engine mount you can remove the belt and install new belt , k,series cam holder tool is use full for re-alineing cam marks camshaft marks facing each other and crank line up with raised mark on engine block,it is then a case of putting every thing back inthe same order it came off.there are 2 type of cam belt tensioner you can email me and i will tell you how to do each type. marcusloud@blueyonder.co.uk.

My engine is a v6 03 land rover freelander timing mark is like showed in diagram on crankshaft but piston is not tdc

On the freelander it's done that way so none of the pistons strike the valves like when taking the cylinder head off as these pistons come very close to the valves on these engines but if you take off the crankshaft pulley wheel the true mark will be on the gear that the cambelt sits around use this mark on this gear if you want no1 piston at tdc and set the cams up with their irrelevant marks at the same time

On all diagrams for the 3.5 03 freelander shows the crankshaft mark on center but piston is not tdc.on side mark it does but cant turn

I'm presuming all the freelander range have the same type of set up for the timing. So when you want to work on your freelander changing cambelt a and stuff you set the timing up on to the marks that you see I front of you but on freelander neither piston is at the top or the bottom infact all pistons should be half way up or halfway down the bores which ever choice you want . But take a look at the crankshaft pulley wheel there is so many little bolts holhing it on four or six I'm not sure. If you undo these bolts and remove the crankshaft pulley wheel hey presto there should be another timing mark on the gear behind the pulley wheel it is this timing mark that will get no1 piston at tdc as the timing on freelanders must be spot on

My 2003 freelander crankshaft mark is set as well the cams but piston is not on top dead center on safe mark on sude mark piston is on top but cant turn it gets stuck

I've worked on freelanders loads of times presuming yours is the petrol model when you set the timing up on these when working on them. all pistons are at the halfway mark in the bores this is so no pistons strike the valves when taking the cylinder head off. So the actual mark if you want it set at tdc you need to take off the crankshaft pulley wheel it won't do any harm just four little bolts if I recall when this crankshaft wheel is out of the way you still have the gear there what the cambelt sits round. It is on that gear where the true mark is to set up the timing with no1 piston at tdc. Infact the pulley wheel needs to come off when changing a cambelt make sure the timing marks are set up properly check twice if nessessary then turn engine over one revolution by hand slowly to make sure no internal parts are hitting and timing marks come back together

Have the freelanders from 2002 got fitted a chain cambelt ?

Freelander TD4 diesel has a chain (mega bucks), L series diesel (pre BMW engine) has a belt (plus a small belt for the injection pump). the K series 1,8 petrol and KV6, 2.5L also have belt's.

Vehicle will not start after cambelt and cylinder head refitment

providing all the work is done correctly then it might take a while to start as you need to get the oil into the hydraulic tappets.. then it still might sound noisey untill it has done 10 - 20 miles
