Question about 2009 Dodge Journey

1 Answer

Engine light on

My engine light keeps coming on and staying on. I've been to the dealer twice. The fist time they said the fuel cap was probably not put on correctly (which can cause it to come on), they said to take it off then put it on again and it should reset it's self in 50 miles. I did that and it didn't work. I took it back in and and just reset the button, I drove off the lot and on my way home, the light comes on again. It's very frustrating since I only have 700 miles on it. Does anyone else have this problem or know what else may be causing this?

Third time is a charm. They figured out; it was the catalytic converter. They fixed it. Still not happy my new car had this problem!

Well first thing you need to find out is what code is causing the light to come on.

Goto your local parts store and they can give you the code; then come back and lets us know. Then we can give you much better information.

Have u replaced the fuel cap? They do go bad often. Other then that you are probably having a issue with your vent valve, most common thing I've seen on all Chevy trucks..

After starting car check engine light stays. Car runs fine 2002 mitsubishi galant this is just a recent problem

Diagnosis must begin with scanning your Engine Control Module to find out why it has turned the light on. The car may seem to be running OK, but there is probably a problem that is causing you to use excessive fuel and/or is threatening to destroy some high dollar parts like your catalytic converter.

Sounds like the dealer has more work to do on the EVAP System. Smoke test the system and check Tech Service Bulletins. You could go to a local garage,it would be cheaper.

2006 Subaru Outback: all of a sudden, the cruis control kicked off, I had a ''check engine'' light, flashing ''sport'' light and flashing cruise light?? When I arrived home, I checked under the hood...oil...

Hello, whenever the check engine light comes on the cruse light will flash as well, that is normal. The check engine light will not come on if fluid levels are low or if the temp is getting to high, I am pleased to know that you checked all of the fluids, most wouldn't have even the slightest thought to even try checking them. The On Board Diagnostics or OBD-2 for short only sets a check engine light when the ECM or Electronic Control Module reads a sensor value either too high or too low, but it has to read that same fault 3 consecutive times in a row to turn on the check engine light (w/ flashing cruise). Otherwise your check engine light would be going on and off all the time. I would go to your local parts store and have them check the codes for free because a dealer will have to charge you labor for them to check due to the knowledge needed to use the highly sophisticated scan tool they use. That way you can go either to an independent shop or a dealer with what the other scanner says is wrong which cuts down on the cost of repairs. They will probably ask you if you fueled up just before the engine light came on, in which that would be code P0440:EVAP leak(very small leak), that means the fuel tank sensor doesn't like how you put the fuel cap on. Subaru recommends AT LEAST 3 clicks when tightening your fuel cap. But until that code is checked you won't know whats wrong, if nothing went boom or bang you'll probably be ok. If it does end up being a fuel cap leak, then just loosen the cap put it back on and just make 1 full revolution, and just keep driving it. The light will go off within 3 full warm up cool down cycles or (drive cycles). I hope this info helps...(subyguru)...

Check engine light came on. I checked all fluids and fusses. Everything is good there. Why does my light stay on?

the light needs to be reset...find someone who has an OBD2 diagnostic scan tool or you can buy one for about $120 at most auto stores. i bought one and its already paid for itself.
usually a loose gas cap will cause it to come on, i"ve had that happen twice already.

Engine Light/tighten fuel cap

Good Day,

Sounds like your fuel cap needs to be replaced, there is a rubber seal in there to which keeps fuel pressure up, when this seal goes bad you get a drop in pressure and your engine light will come on. Replace the cap with a new one. As far as your lighter ports that is probably due to a blown fuse and unrelated to the fuel cap issue.

Hope this helps

Check fuel cap light

Good Day,

Probably just a bad seal in the cap. You can purchase a new one from any auto parts store or dealer. Just make sure they cross-refrence the new cap to your car as diffrent caps have diffrent pressure ratings, and you wanna make sure you get the right one. And yes a faulty cap can cause your check engine light to come on as the fuel is not pressurized properly for the motor. Once the cap is replaced with a new one remove your negative battery terminal for a few moments, then re-connect this will clear you check engine light. If you don't do this you engine light will stay on forever.

Good Luck
Hope this helps
