Question about 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD

Not really a problem. Just would like to know why my truck has 2 batteries? And what does the 2nd battery control? I have a 2001 Chev. 2500HD with an 8.1 Gas.

No I have seen dual battery set ups before, I have just never seen them installed from the factory(except on some deisel models. I have had the truck for 5 years and have never changed out the secondary battery but have changed the primary twice. So I wasn't sure what if anything the second battery was supplying. Thanks for the input.

Like the other guy said, it adds to your electrical capacity. Think two are a lot? I had six in my big boat!!! Only drawback is that if more than one goes away at the same time, or you need to change the alternator (higher output) it costs more...Small price to pay for not getting stranded!

Turning over an 8.1 would not be an easy chore for a starter or a battery so GM, in their wisdom (lol) provided you with extra power to get your truck started, especially on cold mornings when battery power is reduced. It works in series with the other battery, they work as one.
When you work on your electrical, charging, or starting systems it can have some bearing on replacement parts so make sure you mention it when getting parts. Hope this helps.

There are a few reasons for having 2 batteries.2 mall batts ,are the same as 1 large one,2 large batts, give you twice the cranking endurance,or if it has alarge motor then you need the reserve power to turn it over in case it is slow to start, like in cold weather, also if the vehicle has an isolator switch you can run on i batt. and keep the other in reserve or use it to run a fridge or whatever or r pretty much do as you want without ever having to worry about a flat battery.I always have aduel batt ,set up in my landcruisers to go bush and would never be with out them.

You can try to reset it by disconnecting the battery for about 5 minutes. the encoder motor on the transfer case is the most common problem. The trouble codes really need to be pulled from the 4x4 module to make sure your not replacing the wrong part. If you post the codes we can go from there. I don't know if auto zone is capable of pulling those codes or not. You might have to take it to a real garage.

It sounds like your alternator might be starting to go bad and the Battery Light is coming on because it is not charging the battery correctly. Have your Alternator checked with a volt meter, it should be reading 13 to 14 volts if working correctly. If not, replace your alternator.

if you have an anti-theft radio option, when you disconnect the battery you disable the radio. there is a code you need to activate so this does'nt happen, but you must do it before you disconnect the battery. by taking the truck to a dealer, he will use the VIN number and the radio serial number to get the reactivation code from the GM tech service computer bank----------just another example of the useless **** GM puts on their vehicles and costs their customers more money and time.
