Drain al the fluid out and go to the dealer or call to find out what suitable substitute can be used usually dextron/mercron transmission fluid but call to confirm. You must now add fluid and run the car in reverse, drive for about ten minutes, drain the fluid and repeat this procedure one more time, you must purge all the fluid out to ensure you have no more incorrect fluid left in trans.

Why Is My Automatic Transmission Slipping? If you have an automatic transmission and it "slips" while you are driving it-that is, the car engine revs without the power going to the wheels-the most common cause (though not the only possible cause) is low transmission fluid. If the slipping is caused by low fluid, it will get worse as the transmission gets hotter.
Why Is My Manual Transmission Slipping? A standard ("manual") transmission uses fluid too, but leaks aren't a common issue; a standard transmission could lose all its fluid and never slip at all, though eventually it would lock up while driving down the road. If you have a standard transmission, and it's slipping-the engine revs but it doesn't transmit power to the wheels-the problem is usually in the clutch.
Further down in the article I discuss how to diagnose this problem.

How do I fix a slipping transmission?

may have to bite the bullet and take it to a shop

they towed a front wheel drive car with the drive wheels on the ground? i'm asking this because you didn't state year, make , model

if they did, you can sue them for damages after the tow i guess

Need to fix the slipping on an automatic transmission

change the trany fluid and filter. get some lucas transmission treatment and put it in before you put your trany fluid in. after all fluids are in and everything is together start the vehicle and hold foot on brake and go through the gears it might slip a lil the first 5 min of driving or until fluid works through trany.

02 oldsmobile alero trans slips only in reverse 120,000 miles not sure of history of the car not sure how to check the fluids because there's no dipstick any ideas??

Once the transmission starts to slip like this that is the end of its life and it will need a rebuild. If drive engages OK then fluid is not the problem and worn parts would be the problem. The fluid is checked at a fill plug on the side of the transmission under the car, you can't access it from up top. 120,000 is about it for front wheel drive automatics, they as a rule last far less long than a rear drive car.

Car slows while in drive

Your transmission is slipping. Check your fluid (if automatic) or clutch (if standard). If the fluid is low then obviously add the proper kind but if not then you need to get your car into a transmission shop.

Transmission jump ( kind of like a THUD sound???)

sounds like your transmission filter and fluid need changed if this is an automatic, if its a standard then your clutch may be starting to slip

1997 Chrysler Grand Voyager. Transmission and power steering problem. Jumping when accelarating, and not picking up but high revving noise. Limped it halfway home then had it recovered. Last night...

For the steering problem first at all check it the fluid level.
For the Transmission, if you recently replaced the fluid this MUST BE a ATF+3. Never use others like Dexron or Mercon. So, first, let me know what kind of fluid you put on in.

Unable to get gears - car just revs in drive.

Standard or Automatic ???
Standard: the clutch is slipping, Automatic: the clutches internal are slipping, did you bother to check the transmission fluid level first ?????

What kind of oil do I put into the transfer case? Is that why the computer keeps saying check 4 wheel drive?

no, DO NOT use gear oil. The transfer case uses the same type of automatic transmission fluid that the transmission uses. Is the display saying "service 4x4 switch"? If so it is common and the 4WD indicator light switch is bad and needs replaced. It's only purpose is to tell the driver info center what 4 wheel drive mode the transfer case is in. This switch will not affect the function of the 4 wheel drive. The correct fluid for the transfer case is +4 automatic transmission fluid.
