1. Think about having it done for safety's sake. mess up any of these steps and you can be visiting the hospital
put the car on jack stands.
pull off the wheel
two bolts on engine side of caliper hold it to the wheel assembly
Very carefully lift caliper-don't damage line
the brake pads snap out
carefully compress the piston assembly with an appropriate tool
clean the caliper pad contact area
put the brake pad adhesive on the back of the pads
Snap in the pads
reassemble

You will need a special tool for the back brakes,Autozone will loan it to you for 60 bucks,you will get it back when you return,I used it.I replaced brake pads front and back and both back rotors.The driver side rear had metal on metal,all disc brakes,brake pads on that rear side were completely worn down to metal,the driver side was like new,kept wondering why,replaced both rear rotors,put back together,then then I noticed where brake line hose went into brake caliber was leaking,so that caused the side with new like brake pads not to be gripping disc putting all brake pressure of that one side,so the copper fitting their was bad,put new one on and leak stopped.

How to Change Your Brake Pads


Brake Pads should be replaced in pairs, the front will wear faster than the rear so usually the front will need to be replaced more often.
First Here is a list of what you will need. This list mainly applies to disc brakes but I have included a link for how to replace drum brakes with graphic images. All parts can be purchased from an auto parts or hardware store.
  • New Brake Pads
  • C-Clamp
  • Small amount of Brake/Caliper Grease (usually comes in a small packet)
  • A can of Brake Cleaner
  • Car-jack and lug wrench
  • A small bungee cord
  • Wrench/Socket/Allen Wrench (depending on your car)
  • A hammer (mainly for drum brakes)
  1. Lossen the lug nuts.
  2. Jack up the vehicle.
  3. Remove the tire from the vehicle.
  4. Use the brake cleaner to spray the brake pads and disc taking care not to spray plastic parts on the vehicle. This is done to partly protect yourself from the brake dust and to also clean everything and help remove rust.
  5. The following steps are for disc brakes, for drum brakes skip to step 15.
  6. Next, remove the caliper bolts, the heads will be located on the inside side of the caliper, the wrench needed will vary base on vehicle make and model.
  7. Slide the caliper and brake pads off of the disc.
  8. Remove the outer brake pad.
  9. The bungee cord may be used to keep the caliper from hanging freely. Do not allow the brake line to be bent or hold the caliper itself.
  10. Use the C-Clamp to slowly depress the inner brake pad as far as it can go. If any brake fluid leaks out of the reservoir, it may need to be replaced once brakes are replaced. Make sure to press the brake pedal several times between each tire having brakes replaced to help keep brake fluid from leaking. Some brake fluid may be siphoned beforehand to prevent loosing any fluid.
  11. If the disc is to be replaced, do so now, spray the new disc with brake cleaner to remove any residue. The disc should be replaced if grooves or chips are found on it, or if it is outside of thickness specifications of the manufacturer.
  12. Grease the caliper bolts.
  13. Put the new brake pads on the caliper and slide the brake pads and caliper back onto the disc and insert the bolts.
  14. Skip to Step 18 for disc brakes.
  15. For drum brakes, use the hammer, brake cleaner, and possibly a pry bar to remove the drum which should slide directly off.
  16. Use the brake cleaner to spray the brake pads and other parts within the drum to clean and prevent dust from being breathed in.

  18. Mount the tire, bolt on the lug nuts, and remove the jack.
  19. Press the brake a few times and clean up.

Change disc front breaks 2001 seville


jack up the car and remove the tire. you will see a caliper that is the thing that looks like it is hugging the disc. there are 2 bolts on the back side of the caliper. one on top one on bottom. loosen them and then they slide back out of the way. the caliper will then slide off. remove the old brake pads. use a 4 inch C clamp with the threaded end inserted to the cup part of the caliper and the stationary part on the opposite side and tighten the clamp down slowly. this will open the caliper back up so it will fit over the new brake pads. after you have the new pads in place slide the caliper over the brakes and disc realign the bolts that hold the caliper in place, tighten, replace tire and repeat on the other side. once complete make sure you pump the brakes a few times be fore you move the car so the caliper can close in on the new brakes otherwise you won't have any brakes for the first few pumps of the pedal

WHy dose my brake pedal push back and make a grinding noise


Look through the openings in your front wheels and look at the front rotors-are they gouged up? You are probably running metal-to-metal, pads to rotors.
Chances are real good your rotors will have to be replaced along with new pads, but if you catch it early enough you might be able to have them machined, although nowadays that is hardly easy to get done and the savings usually is not as significant as it once was.

will try to help. 1st remove the wheel, then remove the 2 caliper bolts that hold the brake caliper on. after removal of brake caliper, [it should just pull off after the 2 bolts are removed] replace the brake pads[be sure to apply anti squeal lube to the outer side of the pads..not the pad itself,the one not contacting the brake rotor] install the pads, the you will need a C clamp to push the brake caliper pistons back into the caliper. i've used this installation easily. use the old pad ,place it against the caliper piston,then apply the C clamp and push the caliper piston back into the brake caliper, then the brake caliper will slide back over the new pads easily, no need to bleed the brakes if you use this solution. replace the brake caliper bolts, then go to next side and repeat the process. after the replacement of the front brake pads,pump the brakes with engine running!!! it's really a simple process. be sure the brake pads are facing the brake rotors with the [pads] facicing the rotors. no metal facing metal. easy! if you have added brake fluid recently, do not be alarmed if you see fluid coming out of the brake master cylinder,when you use the C clamp to collaspe the brake caliper back into the recessed position. [as always when you have to add brake fluid to the brake master cylinder,it only means your brakes are wearing naturally. if you have a vibration in front wheels or steering wheel when braking, you have a brake rotor or both front brake rotors that need replacement with your brakes also. hope this helps and as always, please get a second opinion if you have doubt. an expert will be happy to help. thank you for choosing fixya.com

How to change front disc brake pads on 2000 Mazda Bravo B2500


jack up car, remove the road wheels, at the rear of the caliper you will have 2 or 3 bolts holding the caliper onto the stub axle, remove the bolts and remove the caliper, remove the outer pad, leave the inner pad in place and use a "G" clamp to compress the brake piston until it has bottomed, if this is not done the new pads will not fit back over the rotor as the piston is too far out and the new pads are thicker than the old ones.
place the new pads in the caliper and fit over the rotor, replace the 2 or 3 bolts that hold the caliper in place, replace the road wheel, tighten the nuts and lower the car to the ground, pump the brake pedal to see if you have brakes, if you do have brakes take it for a test drive away from any traffic if possible

How do you replace brakes on 1999 Pontiac Sunfire?


The engine size don't matter except when you order the parts. First you will want to chock the rear tires. This is a front wheel drive, when you jack the front, park wont work. you should also set the parking brake.
You will want a metric socket set and rachet, and a fairly large flat head screw driver.
Remove the wheel.
When you look at the brakes, you should see 2 bolts holding them on, If they have a star shape that looks like a screw driver might fit in it, it is a torx bit, you will need to replace the wheel and go get one. The guy at the parts store should be able to tell you what size.
I'm pretty sure it is going to be a regular hex nut, probably 12 or 13mm.
You can loosen them, but don't remove them yet.

First you need to depress your caliper. This can be done a couple ways.
I just insert a screw driver between the pad and the rotor(the shiny thing that the pads make contact with.) Carefully pry the inner pad slowly away from the rotor. Don't scratch the rotor, you can dig into the pad all you want, your putting new ones on.
Once the inner pad is all the way in, then you can remove the bolts and the caliper will slide out.
Remove the old pads and replace with the new.
Put the caliper back on, make sure you get the bolts tight.
Do the other wheel the same way.
The other way to get the caliper pushed in, by the way.
Remove the bolts, remove the caliper from the rotor, Use a large "c" clamp to depress the cylinder.

P.S. Do not under any circumstances remove your brake lines.

When you are finished with brakes and have tires replaced....

Caution!!! Before you start your car, pump your brakes a few times. Check your brake fluid. You more than likely wont need any, but you should always check it.
Also, do not add brake fluid before replacing pads, the level is going to be higher with new pads.

Back brakes will be similar if it is disc, if it is drum, do your self a favor and have some one else do it or get a service manual. I could walk you thru it, but you need more tools and you have to adjust them....
Better to pay $100 or so and have it done right.

it has front and rear disc brakes, disc brakes are very simple to change out. Most disc brakes have two bolts that hold them on, one on the bottom one on the top on the inside of the brake caliper, they may be an allen head, or just a bolt. Remove them counter-clockwise. After you remove the two bolts, lift up and away on the caliper and the whole assembly will come off. Once you pull the assembly off you will see the two pads, one of them is driven by a piston, the other one is fixed. Remove the fixed one, they just pop off (have little metal clips you may have to slide the pad off). Take a C-clamp or something comparable to squeeze with, place it on the back of the caliper and on the old pad thereby squeezing the cylinder back into the piston, once you squeeze the cylinder back into the piston, it will give you room needed for thicker new brake pads. Piston should retract with the c-clamp fairly easy, shouldn't be a whole lot of resistance. Remove c-clamp after you get it to retract and remove old pad. Put new pad on, just like you took the old ones off. All four are basically the same to change out, they all have two bolts holding them on. You pull those, get the pistons to retract and replace the worn pads, put them back on, line up holes, put bolts back in... and your good to go. When you get back in the car and turn the key on, you may have to pump the brakes a few times.

How to replace rear brakes on a 2006 chrysler minivan


take the wheels off the front,,remove the 2 bolts holding the brakes caliper to the caliper mount and pull off the caliper,then remove the old pads by popping them out, and the remove the 2 bolts holding the caliper mounting bracket to the hub and then remove the rotor,,,to either resurface it,,or replace it with a new one,,,the put the rotor back on(new one) install the mounting bracket and pads and press the caliper piston in with a pliers and then put it back onto the mounting bracket and then tighten all bolts,and do the other side,,pump up brakes and youre good to go

Changed front brake pads. brake pedal goes to floor. no brakes


Something doesn't sound right, you shouldn't have to remove the brake line to install pads. Did you have to do this on both sides? Do the new pads and the old pads look the same? Did you get the caliper on crooked? Just recheck your work first before replacing more parts. When you install the caliper, You have to hook the pad on one side first before you slide it over the rotor.
