Question about 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee wont start with the first turn.

I got in my car and started it and it made a cranking noise, but didn't start. I do this a few times and then it starts sometimes. The last time this happened I cranked over and over it never started. I thought I needed a jump so when I got one about 20 minutes later it started. I don't know if its the jumping or the waiting. My questions is do I need a new battery, a new starter, or could it be something else?

There are too many variables that need to be checked out for me to give you a definite answer to your problem. First impression is that your fuel system may be draining back and in cranking, you are re-priming it. Often this can be verified by spraying carb cleaner into the throttle body as you crank it over for the first time...if it starts right up likely that is the problem, but as I said, everything needs to be tested before replacing anything. You can find a decent test procedure in either Haynes or Chilton vehicle specific manuals (available in most larger parts stores) You will also need a decent digital volt/ohmeter to do most tests. Unless the engine is turning slowly, likely the two items you don't need are a battery and starter. (but after repeated attempts at at starting the battery will need charging or any tests you do are invalid.)

It seems like your battery and starter are okay. I'd be more inclined to make sure engine has a good regular spark, and fuel pressure. From what you've said, I'd first check the distributor cap for any cracks or moisture...hope this helps.

My 1996 grand jeep cherokee wants to start..cranks up but wont..however, when i put key in ignition..none of the dials move...they're all dead

First the dials will not normally move until the vehicle is started. This is to reduce the load on the battery when cranking. You need to check for spark and fuel and all of the normal things for a non-starting vehicle.

I have a 1996 jeep grand Cherokee Laredo. it began to stall at idle and now will not start

Check audibly the fuel pump. It will run for 3 seconds when ignition is turned on, but engine not started. If it makes noise, you could check for pressue at the fuel rail. There is normally a schrader valve you can press. Tske care, fuel under pressure will come out when pump is ok.
if ok, check for eventual fault codes with scanner.
could be crank sensor.

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee will not start. Serpentine belt broke, so I replaced it, but now it will not start even with a jump. only clicks. Starter?

Maybe.
But what caused the belt to break ?
You might want to make sure the crank will turn and that the engine is not locked up.
If the crank turns, you would need to check for battery voltage at the starter.

1996 jeep grand cherokee 5.2L v8 is cranking but wont start doesnt look like its getting a spark

Might be your jeep's ecu is bad. Does the check engine light come on your dash, when you turn the ignition key to on, before cranking? If not, the ecu is bad. If the check engine light does come on, it may be the crank sensor is bad on your jeep.

My 1996 jeep grand cherokee doesnt start half the time

Sounds like a poor connection somewhere...Best time to check is when it's in no-start condition...When running, obviously whatever isn't working is (temporarily). Once you identify the system (fuel, spark etc) that's not working, check all wires and connectors for good contact and continuity.

1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport Ignition Lights Come on but wont crank

Try putting the car in neutral and starting. If its a manual trans it might be the clutch pedal safety switch or it may be something as simple as a loose battery connection.
