I believe you are referring to the wheel hub. It is the housing for the main wheel bearings. The large nut is what is used to set the pressure on the wheel bearings and is held on with a retaining flange.

WHy dose my brake pedal push back and make a grinding noise


Look through the openings in your front wheels and look at the front rotors-are they gouged up? You are probably running metal-to-metal, pads to rotors.
Chances are real good your rotors will have to be replaced along with new pads, but if you catch it early enough you might be able to have them machined, although nowadays that is hardly easy to get done and the savings usually is not as significant as it once was.

How to replace the rear brake pads on a 1995 through 2001 Ford Explorer The system utilizes a drum-in-hat type rear brake rotor. The integral drum allows the use of a drum-and-shoe type parking brake system. All other components are similar to their front disc brake components Remove the two bolts on either side of the brake hose with the rubber boots. Do not remove the four bolts where the axle ties in. The two bolts to be removed require a 10mm socket/wrench. Loosen the pads from the caliper Rotor Removal In order to take the rotors off (replace with new or have them machined), it is best to loosen the emergency brake shoes. To do this, behind the rotors, in the back there is a rubber plug, remove that and you can use a screw driver to engage the teeth of the adjusting screw, turn it clockwise to loosen, usually 10-20 teeth. Usually this means turn it downward. After this, it may still be difficult to get the rotors off without tapping them. Use a rubber mallet and hit them from behind. Before really whacking the rotor, make sure you have loosened the adjusting screw enough. It may take heavy swings of the rubber hammer to do this. It will eventually break loose. Parking Brake You might want to check the parking brake while you are here. To remove:
  • Remove the rear disc brake rotor.
  • Remove the outboard return spring.
  • Remove the adjusting screw spring.
  • Remove the rear brake shoe hold-down spring and pin.
  • Remove the brake shoe adjusting screw and nut.
  • Remove the front brake shoe hold-down spring and pin.
  • Remove both parking brake shoes and the inboard return spring.
  • Check the parking brake lever for excessive wear and replace as necessary.
To install:
  • Position the front parking brake shoe to the backing plate and install the hold-down pin and spring.
  • Install the rear parking brake shoe with the inboard return spring.
  • Position the brake shoe adjuster screw and nut on the shoes and install the rear shoe hold-down pin and spring.
  • Install the brake shoe adjuster spring.
  • Install the outboard return spring.
  • Adjust the parking brake shoes and install the rotor, caliper and wheel.
  • Lower the vehicle and tighten the wheel lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
ADJUSTMENT
  • Measure the inside of the drum portion of the rear brake rotor
  • Remove the rear disc brake rotor.
  • Using Brake Adjustment Gauge D81L-1103-A or equivalent, measure the inside diameter of the drum portion of the rear disc brake rotor.
  • Subtract 0.020 in. (0.508mm) from the first measurement, adjust the brake shoes to that size
  • Adjust the parking brake adjuster screw until the outside diameter of the parking brake shoes measures 0.020 in. (0.508mm) less than the drum measurement.
  • Install the rear disc brake rotor.
Reassembly Reassembly is easy. Put new or machined rotors back on by sliding them over the lugs (they should slide on easily.) Loosen bleeder valve (having a catch bottle handy is good). Push calipers in slowly (using a c-clamp or large channel lock pliers), close bleeder valve. Put on pads. Lubricate metal clips with small amount of anti-seize. Re-adjust the emergency brake by turning the opposite direction from loosening. Refill the brake master cylinder

How do you replace front wheel bearings on a 2001 Pontiac Sunfire?


Hi there

Lock handbrake, loosen lug nuts, jack it up and set on axle stands and remove front wheels.

Unbolt the brake caliper, tie it up to the suspension arm with a zip tie etc. Don't let it hang loose on the brake lines. Unbolt the brake rotor from the hub. You might need a friend to stand on the brakes to keep the rotor from spinning.

Once the brake rotor is off, undo the center hub nut (usually a large bolt 22mm or bigger). Keep these in order when you remove them, the castle nut is next (looks like a little castle turret), washers, a lock nut and then finally the bearings are next. Clean out the aperture with a clean cloth.

Regrease the bearings and the inside of the hub. Refit the parts in the right order. Be gentle with the lock nut, it may take a few goes to get this right as it can be too loose or too tight, making the rotor (when it's back on) feel stiff to turn.

Refit the rotor, brake caliper (make sure the brake line is not crimped) and do the same for the other side if it is necessary. Refit wheels and take her for a spin.

How do I remove and replace the front rotors on my 2004 V6 Ford Taurus


You must remove the brake caliper first then there should be a nut with cotter pin that holds it to the shaft some have a cotter pin some do not, but there should be a nut holding it on, remove nut slide rotor off, pack new bearings with grease then slide new rotor on, install nut and brake caliper, you may need to press caliper piston back in if it is too tight on the new rotor, use a c clamp to press piston back in.

What is the socket size of the nut holding the front rotor on a 2005 toyota corolla? its not a hex nut but a 12 point socket?


the only things that are holding the rotor on is 1) the brake caliper which i believe has 2 14mm screws and 2) the brake caliper bracket which has 2 17mm screws holding it in place.once you remove these 2 parts,tap on the rotor( where the wheel goes bolted on )with a hammer and it should come off easily.if not spray some penetrant on the studs that hold the tire on, then tap on it some more and it should come off.hope this info helps.take care and good luck, manny

Cant get the rotor off of a 99 , any suggestions


Remove the brake caliper, and caliper holder if it goes over the rotor. If it's 2 wheel drive, remove the center cap, take out the cotter pin. Remove the nut holding on the rotor. If it's 4 wheel drive, once you remove the associated brake parts, spray some WD-40 around the studs and the center of the rotor, try striking the rotor with a rubber hammer. Often the rotor will rust to the hub, on the 4 wheel drives. The 2 wheel drives, have the rotor with the hub for the bearings together, the 4 wheel drive has a "top hat" type rotor.

Remove front rotor ?


As I was saying, remove tire, remove brake caliper, and pull the hub by removing the large nut from the axel with rotor attached.
Look on the back of the hub assembly and you will find bolts that hold the rotor on, remove them and take off rotor.
Please let me know how it goes.

Parking brake pedal goes to floor


Hello;
The parking brake cables may be stretched and in need of adjustment. Follow the cables along to a nut. Then you can tighten the adjusters up on both sides until you have the proper tension. Also make certain none of the brackets are bent or broken that the cables ride through.

Brake rotor replacement on 2004 matrix


If you are talking about the brake rotors, you do NOT remove the 30 mm nut. That nut just holds the axle shaft to the hub. Remove the caliper and the caliper bracket, the rotor should come off, you may have to tap the brake rotor to dislodge it from the center hub.
