Question about 1997 Chevrolet Lumina

Can I wire extra lights into the 3rd brake light?

I am having what appears to be the turn signal switch issue, where my turn signals and lights work fine, but no brake light except for the 3rd middle brake light.

Having seen the solution... and the work involved... I'm thinking it to be easier to modify my rear end and wire in LED lights to the 3rd brake light, having the lights come out in behind the red plastic on either end of the trunk lid. The spots where it looks like there would be lights, but are really just there for show.

Would the wiring/power be ok or would that blow a fuse? I'm talking about those 5 LED cluster lights used on like trailers and such.

Well... thing is it's 1 bulb for the driving light, turn signal and brake light. The bulb works when the car is on, and when I put the turn signal on the 2nd filament blinks. When I hit the brake... the 2nd filament doesn't light up, however the 3rd brake light does.

I googled it and found that it's a common defect with these cars and that it's the turn signal switch that causes the problem. After spending 2h of time checking the bulbs, sockets and wiring... it's the only solution left.

I searched how to change the switch and the directions were very long, and went into detail about airbags and steering columns etc.

Looks outta my league... where as splicing a few wires together and drilling a hold into a plastic tail piece... sounds a "bit" easier.

Ouch... also discovered the part is $120CAD. Going to try the LED solution... $9 for a pair of 8bulb LED lights meant for under the headlights... a lot faster and cheaper fix providing they don't short anything out. Sadly... no response to the question so, will have to just hope. :)

Thats alot of work that you could just put into fixing the lights.

This might sound dumb, but make sure your tailights have the right biulbs in them.

If all is good there, then check or have checked the actual sockets for the bulbs.

I bet thats where your problem is.

My 1992 Dodge dynasty turn signal lights and brake lights aren't working can u help

It's probably a bad turn signal switch, since the brake lights are wired in with the turn switch.
If you have a 3rd brake light, the high mounted one in the rear window, this light is separate from the brake lights that go through the turn switch. If your high mount brake light comes on, when brakes are pressed, then brake switch is good and probably a bad turn signal switch. Of course if you have a voltmeter or test light, you could test for power in and power out from the turn switch connector, to help you find the problem.

Third eye works no rear signal or brake lights

The high mount brake light gets its own signal from the brake light switch (on the brake pedal). Or at least the wire leaving the brake light switch will splice, one wire to the high mount brake light, and the other for the rear brake lights is routed through the turn signal switch, and coordinated there with the turn signal wires to the rear brake lights. The brake wires and turn signal wires share the same wire, and same filament in the bulbs. It is kind of complicated, but brakes applied with no turn signal, brake light wire goes from brake light switch through the turn switch and out to the bulbs. If brakes applied with turning signal, non blinking brake light wire goes from turn switch to rear light, while the turning signal wire will go through the flasher relay, and then to the rear light to cause blinking.

I hope that makes sense. It appears the problem may be in the turn signal switch for both the turn signals and the rear brake lights.

Trailblazer no brake lights

As in the previous comments the brake switch wire goes to the turn signal switch and the third brake light. Since the 3rd brake light is working, the problem is in the turn signal switch. When the switch is centered, both brake lights have 12v to them. When you make a left or right turn, the switch has to switch connections between the turn signal blinker and the brake light circuit for the appropriate illumination of the proper light sequence. Buy a new turn signal switch and temporary plug it in. You will see the proper operation.

2005 Suburban brake signal light issue

Sounds like a faulty turn signal switch. The brake light wire is routed through the turn switch, so it appears the turn switch has gone crazy.

What causes the brake lights not come on,but allow 3rd mount light to come on? i've checked the bulbs, sockets, fuses. now i'm stumped.

THOSE LIGHTS ARE ON 2 DIFFERENT CIRCUITS. ONE WHITE WIRE COMING OUT OF THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH GOES TO THE CENTER BRAKE LIGHT. THE OTHER WHITE WIRE GOES FROM THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH TO & THROUGH THE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH SO THE LIGHTS CAN BE USED AS BRAKE LIGHTS OR TURN LIGHTS. THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH IS GOOD BECAUSE THE CENTER BRAKE LIGHT IS WORKING. IT IS A BAD WIRE { WHITE } FROM THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH TO THE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH OR A BAD TURN SIGNAL SWITCH.

I think your trouble is in the turn signall switch, just had the same trouble on my truck. Turn signall switch is about $250 because it is actually turn signalls, wipers, washers, 4 ways, and dimmer all in one.

95' Buick regal, 3rd brake light works, tail lights work, turn signals work, stoplight switch seems to work ie 3rd brake light working, fuse is ok, changed bulbs, but no rear brake lights.

If the third brake light works and the regular ones don't, it is most likely a bad turn signal (multifunction) switch. The switch is able to kill the brakes lights to run the turn signals, and in rare circumstances does this. I've seen it several times. It could also be wiring, especially near the turn signal switch, but it is usually the switch.

The brake lights (excluding the 3rd brake light) go through the turn signal switch. It's possible there's a bad connection in the switch causing your symptoms. I would rule out the brake switch on the pedal, considering the third brake light works. Locate a wiring diagram for the brake light circuit, follow the wires into the steering column as far as you can and verify it's getting power up until the turn signal switch and verify no power is coming out of it. Once that's determined it's time to replace the switch.
