Question about 1991 Chevrolet Camaro

91 Camaro RS V6 starts, but won't stay running

It will start, run abot 30 seconds and die like it's running out of gas. We have changed the fuel pressure regulater, fuel pump, fuel filter. It has fuel pressure, could the injectors be clogged? I really think it's fuel related. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks

    I replaced the distributor and the problem went away for a couple of days. Now I have a new problem, it will start and rum for about 15 min. then die. I start it and runs for a couple of seconds the dies. If I wait for the morning then it will do the same. What sensors or relays wait for the motor to warm up before being activated? I also replaced the ECU and that didn't work. I getting tired if dumping money in to this sinking brick...HELP.

    I don t have a solution....I am having similar problems with my 92. It starts fine but then it lops and eventually dies. Tested the fuel pressure and its hardly anything. Is there any other way to test the fuel pump before I go and speend 600 to have it replaced.

    This is most definitely a fuel injector. Check resistances on all injectors. If even one of them measure below 12 ohms the computer will shut the whole thing down like someone pulled the plug.

    my car is similar I have the 91 rs v6 model and it starts great runs strong for about 15-20 seconds then dies but I'm getting 44psi of fuel pressure at the rail port could the injectors still be causing this issue?

I'm willing to bet you have bad fuel injectors. Back in 91 they had a problem with on injector shorting out causing the rest to short out. I have a 91 that had the same problem, and my injectors were junk.

Why would a 1991 Camaro rs stall? I was driving and the car started shaking and it didn't want to drive any more the engine was shaking really bad and it turned off on me. I started the car again and it continued to shake but this time i wouldn't move at all I put it on drive and pressed the gas and nothing i put it on reverse i pressed the gas and it still wouldn't move all. I would turn it on and it would automatically turn off i checked the spark plugs and they are fine I also checked the Fuel line to see if it had any pressure and it was fine I also checked the spark plug cables and they are fine whats wrong with my car?

I Did What All Of YOU did And My Car Did The Same Thing So I changed out the fual ejectors and it ran and started up fimne...I know more about camaro;s than i know my own wife!

Definately sounds fuel related. The injectors may be clogged. it would have to be a pretty severe clog to cause this problem but its possible. Usually dirty fuel injectors will just cause the engine to run rough or lose horsepower. Might have water in the gas or something like that too.

Car runs fine at times then will not start. Sprayed carb cleaner in air filter and then it starts but dies when i start. The next day car starts and runs fine.


It sounds like your car isn't getting the proper amount of gas. You say your mechanic changed the fuel pump and the regulator. Id have him run a diagnostic tool on it to see if it throws any other codes. Its getting fire. Try changing the FUEL FILTER. it maybe clogged. maybe the pressure regulator is not giving it enough pressure to push the gas into the engine or maybe the fuel pump is only working at times. Does it run good and then start to spit and spudder then die? if so its not getting gas some how. Idk if you can adjust the pressure regulator or not. i mostly work on old school cars.

Seem's like your fuel pump isn't able to keep the good fuel pressure.

Might be a good idea to check your fuel rail pressure. I assume that it drops before your engine dies!!!

If fuel pressure is ok in your rail, try cleaning the fuel rail and injectors. Sometimes dirt can go from a trashed fuel filter an clog yor rail or the injectors.

Problem with 91 Camaro RS


You have spend a lot of money on parts, have you invested in a Compression Tester or I believe you have Blown your Head Gasket, Cracked your Head. You are now getting Blow By and it is going into your System.

YOUR problem with your Raw Fuel getting into your Exhaust is due to the LAck of compression to Ignite the fuel.

It could also be a Bent or Swallowed Valve.

A Cylinder Leak Down Test will help you resolve this issue.

Diagnose problem.
Pinch off the fuel return line.
Check fuel pressure--I don't wanna!PITA!
The fuel pump won't run if the fuel filter is plugged up.
Toyota's have a gas tank drain plug!!!!!!!!!
My '84 takes a 3/8 " ratchet. Cool.

There may be a fuel pump relay that is toast,but I suspect the filter,off hand.
A plugged filter will overwork the pump and cause the engine to run rich.

sounds like you need to change your fuel filter or you may need a new fuel pump relay

Well code 12 means you are in the test mode of the computer, so skip that one.
Code 54 is telling you the fuel pump circuit voltage is low, which could be the pump relay.

Hello Ryan, start by checking the battery terminals and cables. The cables on these Camaros are known to corrode and cause intermittent starting problems. The next time it stalls & won't start, check for spark. If no spark, the ignition module, pickup coil, or ignition coil is likely the problem. This model did not have a crank sensor. If spark is present, check for fuel pressure. I hope this information is helpful.
