Question about Pontiac Grand Prix

3 Answers

I turn the key and the car does nothing. The lights come on and all the normal things but nothing as far as starting goes. I put a new battery in also. When I try to by pass the ignition and start it on the starter. It sounds like it is going to start but it doesnt. Before this it would start up no problems at all. I just turned the car off and then went to start it and now it does nothing.

I checked and the security light is on and blinking. Also the battery does have a good connection.
I turned the key for ten minutes and the light stayed blinking I tried to start and still the same thing.

From the advice I have received from here and others I am leaning more towards it being something with the ignition and the security feature. I tried turning the key to the on position for 10 minutes and then starting. But the security light still stays on and when I turn the key it still does nothing.

How can I test if this is whats causing the problem?

And if so what would be the problem is it the ignition lock cylinder. Another thing I have two keys and tried both of the keys with the chips in the keys.

Sounds like the starter is bad.

Hi,

There are a few options if the engine does not crank. Either you have a bad starter ,or no command to the starter to crank. Usually (not always), you canhear a click when you turn the key to the crank position. If you do,it's most likely a starter. If you hear nothing at all, it may be wiring or a component. It's not real difficult to diagnose, depending on theengine your car has in it. The 4cyl. is a real bear to access thestarter, the V-6 is not too bad. With a test light or volt meter, checkfor power on the big red wire at the starter. It comes right off thebattery. If there is power at the starter, the next step is to checkfor power at the smaller wire on the starter while someone holds thekey in the crank position. If it has voltage, your problem is thestarter. If not, it's the wiring to the starter. The only components inthe circuit are an ignition switch, and either a park/neutral safetyswitch, or a clutch switch, depending on the transmission. If it's anauto, try putting the car in neutral and starting. If it starts, it'sthe park/ neutral safety switch on the transmission. If not, it couldbe an ignition switch, but I doubt it. I've never seen fail this way. Most logically it's a bad starter, but the few checks above shouldpoint you in the right direction.
Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Is your anti-theft light on? If so, put key in ignition but do NOT start, leave in on position for exactly 10 minutes and light will shut off. As SOON as it shuts off, start car.

If this is not your problem, check battery cable connections to make sure there is metal to metal contact. The GM cables have rubber that like to get in the way. I have use washer on the cables on many gm cars. A part store can test battery, altenator, and starter in the vehicle for free

1994 toyata camry the alarm goes off and will not let me start the car.

factory security does not have toggle switches as far as I know so it is probably an aftermarket system. Try one of two things, turn the toggle switch the oposite direction with battery disconnected. Reconnect the battery and try again, the horn will beep a few times when you reconnect. try starting. If that doesn't work, disconnect the battery and turn the key to the on position and reconnect the battery and the horn will sound but will go off get in the car and try to start. It should start and run normally. shut car off, then you should be able to return the toggle switch to the previous position If this happens again turn the toggle switch to the opposite position with the batterry disconnected and turn the key switch to the on position and reconnect the battery and start when started go see a service that installs aftermarket systems and they should be able to reset it security system Hope this helps

If the light has not stop blinking when you wait ten minutes then it is not going to crank. My does it a lot but after 10 minutes the light has stopped blinking. I think that the ignition switch needs replacing or maybe just the key is worn out. I think when anybody goes to fix this GM problem it is a guessing game.
