Sounds like you have 1 of 2 problems either your TPS ( Throttle position sensor) or idle are control valve

Engine starts and idles fine, but will not rev up (2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.1 diesel auto)

If it was a fuel shortage the engine would rev but to limited speed. This is a lack of air to throttle body. Check for clogged air filter and all the piping and the throttle body.

The most likely cause is a bad throttle position sensor (TPS). It's located on the throttle body. With the engine idling, grab the connector on it and move it up and down. If the idle fluctuates it is for sure bad. Otherwise you will need a scanner to properly diagnose your problem.

Car starts fine and revs fine but once you put into drive it just dies?

Sounds like an idle control problem due to dirty throttle body/idle control valve interior. Remove air ducting between air cleaner and throttle and then clean throttle interior and throttle plate of any oily grime build-up; use cloth and WD40 spray. If Idle valve can be removed, dismantle it from the throttle body and also give its passageways and valve seat a thorough clean up. Reassemble and this should make a real difference.

Most likely is a bad IAC motor. It is in the throttle body. Could be other things though.

Check the 'idle air control valve' which is mounted on the throttle body. It sounds like it is not functioning properly, it's about a $75 part.
