At 21 years old it is important to look at the value of the vehicle and the ability to acquire used parts. If you are replacing the rear end you may be looking at big money if you had to tap the new market ..it could be terribly expensive. Look at things like body rust and engine health before diving into a major expense.

I need to replace the starter on my 1988 subaru gl wagon non turbo five speed and I have no idea where its located.

It will be close to the gearbox bell housing, where it connects to the engine. If I remember correctly (it's been a while) it's on the left side of the engine.

Driving my 1988 subaru GL wagon theres a grinding and rubbing noise coming from the back. it also had my engine smelling like burnt oil. I put transmission oil in it, greased my bearings, greased my C/V...

My L series throws grease up onto the exhaust pipes causing the smell, so you could have split boots on your CV joints. That could account for the smell. The noise could be coming from a rear brake, something in drum like an auto adjuster come adrift If you do have damaged CV joint boots, you will need to have them replaced immediately or you will wear these joints out very quickly.

there is a way,on the diagram below remove the 16,15,14,13 and then remove 18 wiggle the cv out and replace(iy may be hard to remove due to the age of vehicle so a bit of force may be needed(small sledge hammer or puller.

Where is the fuel pump located on a 1984 subaru Gl ?

I have a 1984 Gl Wagon 4WD; the fuel pump is located on the passenger side, on the frame rail under the back door, just in front of the rear wheel. It and the fuel filter are accessed by dropping the mounting plate that also serves as a protective plate. Again, this is the 4WD non-turbo EA81 engine GL Wagon; could be different on the 2WD version.
