It's in the fuel tank and is part of the fuel pump assembly. You will need to drop the tank to gain access to it unless your car is one of the very few that has an access panel to the fuel pump. Access panels are either in the floor of the trunk or under the back seat cushion. A google search should reveal if your car has one.
It is impossible to provide a suggested diagnosis without knowing the YEAR, MAKE, and MODEL of your vehicle.
That being said, usually not. They tend to only be accessible from underneath the vehicle, or the fuel tank will need to be dropped to access the fuel pump.
Until 1987 the fuel pumps were located under the left rear of the vehicle Starting in 1989, it is inside the fuel tank. You can access it without removing the fuel rank via an access panel inside the rear cargo or passenger area. You have to remove the rear seat to gain access to the panel.
Typically, you will find the fuel pump for a BMW 525 located under an access panel in the trunk. Remove the contents of the trunk, remove the floor/spare tire cover and a metal access panel will be visible on the floor being held in by several small bolts. The panel is about 4"x6" in size. Remove the bolts, carefully pry up the panel (it has some sticky sealing material) and the fuel pump mounted on top of the gas tank will be visible with fuel lines entering/exiting it. This is where it was for my 1990 525i.
Hello, this is normally caused by a bad fuel level sensor. the fuel level sensor is mounted on the side of fuel pump inside the fuel tank. there is a access panel in the floor of the trunk that can be removed to gain access to the fuel pump and level sensor.
Remove the fuel level sensor (5) from the modular fuel sender.
pump located on top of the fuel tank just behind rear seat on driver side, to access pump, remove foam with three push-to-lock screws holding the foam running along the back of the seat, be careful not to break the foam, then 4 philip screws to remove floor panel to view the top of the fuel tank, there are about 8x 8mm hex nuts holding the complete intank fuel pump and fuel gauge.
