After you turn the ignition key off, the car keeps running smoothly, a fuse must be pulled under the hood to shut the car off. There are no DTC's.

@ Gearheadtool -

I would disagree with the 3 'solutions' provided to you.

What I believe that you have happening here, is an internal failure in the electrical portion of the ignition switch.

An easy way to check this is to remove the lower part of the instrument panel, under the ignition, and remove the connection from the back of the ignition switch. If the engine shuts off, you have isolated the problem.

I had this happen to me one day I was under the trunk replacing the passenger rear turn signal bulb. I saw a connector unplugged and thought that I had just bumped it loose. I connected it and the car would not shut off. I could turn it off and remove the key. I back tracked and found that this connector would not allow the car to turn off. I still do not know the purpose of it. If anyone knows please post!

Why does it start and run, then dies?

Keep ur ear out . If it first turn the key on you'll ear the pum on tank going. If it keeps on then is plug . Another way to chek it is on the fuel injectors line. It looks like tire valve . Slowly press on fuel should came out. If not is the fuel pump. Be careful if u check x pressure keep ur face out of the way.

My 1990 4runner i turn it over and starts fine and then runns out of gas if i turn it over and keep it turning over after it starts it will keep running

I would check the coil to see if the power side is getting battery voltage with the key in the on position. It could be the key switch.

Trouble starting keeps running after turning it off

If it is chugging and running rough after you turn the key off, it may be "dieseling" which is caused by carbon buildup in the cylinders and the idle speed being higher than spec. Pulling the coil wire from the coil and the engine continues to run is a good example.

1991 poniac firebird will not start and the secerrity light keeps flashing

The most likely cause of the problem is that your security module is not reading your key correctly. This is usually due to a defective key tumbler assembly. Try this to get it started:

1. Connect a battery charger or connect to another vehicle with jumper cables to keep the battery from running completely dead. If you set your parking brake before turning the key on, this will also help because it will keep your daytime running lamps from coming on.

2. Turn the key to the RUN position and wait about 10 minutes until the security light stops flashing.

3. Without turning the key off, turn the key to the START position and see if the engine will start.

If this does not work to get it started, you will have to tow it.
In either case, (whether you get it started or not, the key tumbler assembly probably needs to get replaced.
