Question about 1987 Toyota 4Runner

2 Answers

I have a 1987 4runner and the rear window stopped working. It used to work intermittently if I pushed on the tailgate or moved the main wiring harness going into the rear of the tailgate. Now nothing, where do I start?

I hade the same problem first pull the cover for the tailgate off and check the wiring for damage like cracked or broken wires if none than ckeck at the area where the wires bend there might be some broken wires if so ose small **** connectors to fix.

Rear tailgate lock stopped working

I would check with a dealer/mechanic because if it isn't a fuse it could be a wiring issue. Try pushing the tailgate in (like your closing it) and then try unlocking it while doing that. It could just be jammed.

Rear heater and rear window break light not working

Is this a hatchback? check the wiring, where it goes from the tailgate to the vehicle body, passed experience, continual opening and closing the tailgate causes the wiring to flex and break. The wiring is usually in a rubber sleeve.

My rear power window works from the switch at the console, but not using the key in the tailgate. Any suggestions?

You could only asume it would be the back door window control switch (operates off key barrel) or associated wiring, as this is wired in parallel to the main switch inside. You could just check to make sure it is plugged in correctly.

I just bought a 1996 ford bronco to day and the rear window worked then i tried to open tailgate and now it wont work ? can you help.

This is a pretty common problem, Inspect the wiring in the tailgate jam area ,the wiring takes a lot of abuse ,every time the tailgate is open and closed the wiring inside the( black vinyl tube ) gets flexed back and forth and in time the wiring breaks some times if you open up the vinyl tube and inspect the wires it will appear the wires are ok but if you pull on the wire you'll find that it will actually stretch and all thats holding it together is the vinyl insulator ,also there are switches in the door latches of the rear gate that tell's if the tail gate is closed,if its not closed completely it will not allow the window to work properly hope this gets you in the right direction

1987 toyota 4runner tailgate window stopped working

REMOVE THE REAR TRIM PANEL ON THE TAILGATE AND SEE IF THE MOTOR IS GETTING 12 VOLTS AND A GOOD CHASSIS GROUND CONNECTION, MANY TIMES THE WIRING HARNESS THAT GOES IN TO THE TAILGATE DEVELOPES A OPEN/BROKEN WIRE FROM THE REPEATED OPENING AND CLOSING OF THE TAILGATE, THE WIRE BREAKS INSIDE THE PLASTIC INSULATOR AROUND THE WIRE, SO IT IS NOT APPARENT ON VISUAL INSPECTION, REQUIRES THE USE OF AN OHM METER AND A VOLT METER.

Bronco rear window was being rolled up with a key when spare tire bracket was closed. It stopped halfway up and now won't move. I suspect the tailgate open switch. Where is this switch?

The electric key switch is next to the key cylinder on the rear door. You can see it easily with the window down and weatherstripping pulled out. The wiring may have become chaffed with the window over the years or the switch corroded in the contact points inside.

Rear Window in 1990 Ford Bronco

you could run a 3 way switch of some kind. but i would try looking in the access panel and finding the safety switch either right on the bottom of the handle or the drivers side tailgate latch. they are known to go bad.you can replace it but i pulled mine out and jumped it with a piece of wire works fine now

Back door wont open and window wont go down

The rear window has to be completely down in order to move the tailgate! You should be happy that your window is stuck up, unlike mine which is stuck all the way down! I have to completly take apart my tailgate!! If you want to try a trick to get the rear window down, my bronco has a rear window switch right next to the headlight knob, take the 2 purple wires on that window switch, and cross them, if your motor still works and if the wires are good, that should make the window go down!!! good luck, hope that helps!
