Question about 1978 Pontiac Bonneville

It's been over 18 years since I've changed a fan belt on a 1967 Bonneville. does the radiator cover come off and so with the fan?

Diagram on how to change a water pump


It is driven by the timing belt. You must remove the radiator fan, drive belt or belts, possibly valve covers, the harmonic balancer, and then the timing cover. This is the time to change the timing belt and tensioner and idler as well.

2005 Lincoln LSV8 (3.9) overheating ..no H2o in crankcase, had NO prob. until had P/S hoses replaced is it necessary to take the serpintine off to change the hoses on that motor? i've been told if


I don't know if you have to remove the belt to change the hoses, but I would think the pump would have to be removed to get to the hoses. If that is true then the belt would come off.
And yes the water pump could be running backwards.
It should be a simple task to check the routing of the belt. You should have a sticker on the engine or the hood showing the correct routing.
If not, you can find a diagram online or ask for one here.

1989 GMC running hot have replaced radiator, thermostat,water pump,Temp sensor, intake taken off ports cleaned out. No air pockets, what am I missing


I had a 1987 oldmobile that had that problem. It turned out that the fan clutch thermostat had gone bad and would not engage when the engine heated up. The fan clutch was part of the fan. I replaced it and solved the problem.

2006 Chevy express van. Normally runs one mark below 1/2 mark. Lately ocassionally goes 1-2 marks above half way (usually when sitting idling). Have had coolant changed (Chevy dealer) and new radiator cap...

How do you replace water pump?


Assuming this is a 460 Ford Big Block:

REMOVAL

-Drain cooling system.
-Remove drive belts.
-Remove bolts attaching fan shroud to radiator.
-Remove fan blade from fan clutch and remove fan shroud.
-Remove fan clutch and water pump pulley from water pump.
-Remove four bolts and one nut attaching A/C compressor mounting bracket to cylinder head and water pump. Do not remove A/C compressor or power steering pump from A/C compressor mounting bracket.
-Pull A/C compressor mounting bracket forward to remove from stud on water pump.
-Remove bolt attaching generator adjusting arm to water pump. Remove four bolts attaching generator mounting bracket to cylinder head, cylinder block and water pump.
-Remove remaining water pump attaching bolts and remove water pump from engine front cover.
-Remove water pump cover from water pump. Discard water pump housing gasket and water pump cover gasket.
INSTALLATION
-Remove any gasket material from water pump cylinder front cover and separator plate mating surfaces.
-Position new water pump housing gasket and water pump cover gasket coated on both sides with Perfect Seal Sealing Compound B5A-19554-A or equivalent water-resistant sealer meeting Ford specification ESE-M4G115-A.
-Position water pump and water pump cover onto engine front cover. Install bolts and tighten to16-24 Nm (12-18 ft. lbs.).
-Install generator mounting bracket to cylinder head, cylinder block and water pump with four attaching bolts. Install generator adjusting arm to water pump with one attaching bolt. Tighten 7/16-inch bolts to 54-71 Nm (40-53 ft. lbs.) and 3/8-inch bolts to 41-54 Nm (30-40 ft. lbs.).
-Position A/C compressor mounting bracket over water pump stud and secure to cylinder head with four bolts tightened to 54-71 Nm (40-53 ft. lbs.) and secure nut to water pump to 41-54 Nm (30-40 ft. lbs.).
-Install water pump pulley and fan clutch to water pump hub with four bolts. Install fan blade to fan clutch with four bolts. Tighten water pump pulley, fan clutch hub bolts, and fan-to-fan clutch hub bolts to 16-24 Nm (12-18 ft. lbs.). Install fan shroud.
-Install drive belts.
-Fill and bleed the cooling system.
-Start the engine and check for leaks

Overheating Problem with 2003 Bonneville. I have


The one thing I would check first is the cooling fan a quick check is with engine running turn a/c on and see if radiator cooling fans are running, if they are then we know the the fan's are good, if they don't come on check voltage at cooling fan if you have voltage bad cooling fan, turn car and a/c off, start car again with a/c off and fan's should come on at about 220deg. if they don't come on disconnect coolant temp sensor fan should come on, more then likely bad coolant sensor, now if fan don't come on you'll need check check your radiator or have a radiator flush.

6-300 Engines
  1. Drain the cooling system.
CAUTION When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by the ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.
  1. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the water pump.
  2. Remove the drive belt, fan, fan spacer, fan shroud, if so equipped, and water pump pulley.
  3. Remove the alternator pivot arm from the pump.
  4. Disconnect the heater hose at the water pump.
  5. Remove the water pump.
  6. Before installing the old water pump, clean the gasket mounting surfaces on the pump and on the cylinder block. If a new water pump is being installed, remove the heater hose fitting from the old pump and install it on the new one. Coat the new gaskets with sealer on both sides and install the water pump in the reverse order of removal. Torque the mounting bolts to 14-18 ft. lbs.

  2. Remove the bolts securing the fan shroud to the radiator, if so equipped, and position the shroud over the fan.
  3. Disconnect the lower radiator hose, heater hose and by-pass hose at the water pump. Remove the drive belts, fan, fan spacer and pulley. Remove the fan shroud, if so equipped.
  4. Loosen the alternator pivot bolt and the bolt attaching the alternator adjusting arm to the water pump. Remove the power steering pump bracket from the water pump and position it out of the way.
  5. If necessary, remove the air conditioner compressor and bracket. The refrigerant lines should remain connected.
  6. Remove the bolts securing the water pump to the timing chain cover and remove the water pump.
  7. Thoroughly clean the mounting surfaces of all gasket material.
  8. Install the water pump in the reverse order of removal, using a new gasket. Torque the bolts to 15-22 ft. lbs. in the sequence shown.

  1. Remove the bolts securing the fan shroud to the radiator, if so equipped, and position the shroud over the fan.
  2. Remove the fan assembly.
  3. Remove the fan shroud.
  4. Remove the accessory drive belts and water pump pulley.
  5. Remove the alternator and brackets.
  6. Remove the compressor and bracket and lay it aside. DO NOT disconnect the refrigerant lines!
  7. Remove the power steering pump and brackets. Lay it aside. DO NOT disconnect the fluid lines!
  8. Disconnect the heater hose and lower radiator hose from the pump.
  9. Remove the bolts securing the water pump to the engine and lift off the water pump.
  10. Clean all gasket mounting surfaces thoroughly.
To install:
  1. Install the water pump in the reverse order of removal, using a new gasket coated with sealer. Torque the bolts to 12-18 ft. lbs.
  2. Install all remaining parts in reverse order. Fill the cooling system, start the engine and check for leaks.

Casting dates are usually expressed this way, “C 18 4.” In this example, the “C” means the month of
March, “18” is the day of the month, and “4” is the last digit of the year. This last digit may mean ’64, ’
74, ’84 or ’94, so you must also check the other characteristics of the block to determine in which
decade and year it was made. Some parts have the decade and year cast on them; these identifiers
look like this: “C 18 84.” GM introduced new model years in September or October of each year, so
when you see a casting date of “L 16 7” for example, this indicates a casting date used in the 1968
model year because it translates into December 16, 1967. A 1968 model Camaro assembled on
January 6, 1968, might contain a number of parts that were cast in December, 1967. Casting dates
should precede hand-stamped engine assembly dates.

t may be easier to remove the pulley from the water pump shaft by using belt tension to hold the pulley prior to removal.
  1. Remove the bolts securing the water pump to the timing chain cover and remove the water pump.
To install:
  1. Coat a new gasket with sealer and install the water pump. Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  2. Install the power steering pump bracket.
  3. Connect the lower radiator hose, heater hose and by-pass hose at the water pump.
  4. Install the fan shroud, if so equipped.
  5. Install the pulley, fan spacer, fan and drive belt(s).
  6. Fill the cooling system.
