Check the temp sending unit, also your thermostat could be stuck closed. Your coolant fan may not be operating

Temp gauge works errtic on a 2001 optima but does not overheat

First check your coolant level. If it is low, look for leaks. Also don't rule out the reservoir isn't bad. Also if the hose is pinched to reservoir, this will cause low coolant in the engine.

Overheat and accelerating automatically

Time to change the thermostat if you not already have done so. This is the cause of most overheating problems, although a good radiator flush may solve the problem also. The fan will stay running until the engine coolant reaches the proper parameters and then shut off.

My 1999 buick century's temp. gauge shows it to be over heating when i drive for a while, though its not over heating. we've flushed the coolant system (didn't help) and when the temp gauge shows it to be...

Hey, saw your posting and just wanted to ask if you found a solution to that problem because I'm having the exact same problem. I just started this morning, my gauge showed it as being in the red area so i figured it was bout to overheat. But when I would accelerate the temp gauge would start to come down to a normal level. But everytime I stop it would elevate to the red area. I havent tried the thermostat thing( it seems it didnt work for you I see) If you find a solution enlighten me at my email...Kbrodie@ci.durham.nc.us

Engine temp heats up when at idle, returns to normal temp when at high speed. Thermostat?

Sounds like the fan thermostat is not working. If the fan doesn't come on then it will overheat when there is no airflow. When you drive it the air flows through it just fine.

Overheating at idle

sounds like a partially plugged radiator. Colder temps will be OK but when weather warms up the problem shows up too...check for leaves etc between the radiator and ac condenser before doing anything else. Stuff on the outside will act the same way as an internal obstruction.
