Question about 1989 Ford F 150
I have an 1989 F-150 and the transmission won't shift into overdrive. First, second, and third shift but a little hard to me. Is there an overdrive for this truck? RPMs seem high at 45 mph or higher because my exhaut is loud apove that speed.

The problem is caused by electrical noise making the torque convertor go in and out of lock up. The dodge dealer has a computer flash for it. The fash only works about 30% of the time. This is a major problem to diag. Usually requires ground straps installed on pcm or pcm replacement could also be the altenator, wiring, or anything that runs to the pcm or tranny.

SOURCE: Truck jerks hard in overdrive
its just time for a tune up
what your getting at low RPMs is just a misfire. i would bet to say that you engine light is also on.
so plugs and clean your throttle body and if you haven yet replace your fuel filter.

Sounds like the passing gear cable is out of adjustment. Get a shop manual and see what the specs are on how to adjust it properly. It is a pretty simple fix.
